where have you folks mounted your HondaMan ignition?
« on: March 31, 2010, 03:44:24 AM »
out of curiousity, where are your hondaman ignition boxes mounted? i made a padded strap from aluminum bar stock, heated and bent to the shape and size of the box, with rubber cut from an old tire tube as padding, then mounted on top of the airbox on my k4 750.

The wires go through a grommet-ed hole in the bottom of the tool tray.

You can see where you have to remove part of the side of the tool tray to get the unit to fit.

There tool tray is now rubber mounted and there is a rubber pad under the HondaMan unit.

Zip tied in place.

I just mounted mine under the battery box which was one of his suggestions. It close to all the connections that way.

I have mine mounted on the front of the battery box with zip ties. I run pod filters so you probably couldnt do this with the stock airbox.

On my k5 I mounted it in front of the battery, between the airbox & battery, nice & tight, ziptied. I found my wires from the ignition a little to short to run it in next to the battery. But that could have been just a one time abnormality. Hondaman ignitions rock, best $ can buy.

Mine is sitting on top of my foam air filter  ;D  Getting 'round toit and installing it permanent has been delayed do to all the riding I've been doing the past few weeks!

My unit has the on-off-on switch, so I want to mount it where I can reach the switch from the seat, but have it hidden enough that it isn't obvious that there is a security device on the bike.  Maybe close to the petcock so I can flip it on when turning on the gas and no one is the wiser of what I just did.

Mine fit very nicely between the batter box and the rear fender...basically invisible.
I used industrial velcro to hold it in place...can't go anywhere there anyway!

Bottom of the airbox worked for me, it was pretty tight in there with the stock airbox.  Used some metal zip ties.

I actually extended the wires to the coil connection at the coils. Applied some rubber (not plastic) tape to the back of the case ( to make it slightly sticky) and used large tie-wraps and strapped it to the frame down tube beside the fuse block. I had asked HondaMan if this was acceptable and he said it was. it is covered easily by the side cover. The space near the battery was occipied by a Scorpion alarm system so i had to find another location.

the part about this ignition that amazes me the most is how quickly the bike starts now. and the fact that i close the choke long enough to fire the motor up and i can take the choke right off immediately.

I found that with the length of the wires the easiest thing to do was to zip-tie it to the frame over the air cleaner.  The security switch is accessible but not hidden.  I might do something else with it some day but was anxious to get it ready to ride.  Warms up to idle with choke off much quicker and runs very nice.  Well worth the money.

I have to agree that the warm up time has been shortened on mine too.  Smoothness at high RPM seems to be improved as well, though I didn't think it was rough before.

Finally got 'round Tuit and installed my HMIM permanent.  Originally, I wanted it under the tank next to the petcock so that the security switch could be turned on/off with the same hand as the fuel.  Anyone watchng would be none the wiser that there is a switch down there too.  Unfortunately, I couldn't find a place to mount the box that it didn't interfere with the petcock, the side cover or the throttle/choke components.  I did find a reasonable alternative.  I tie wrapped it to the frame rod right behind the electrical panel.  this is a '77 550K by the way.

Here is a dry fit:

Here it is painted black and tie-wrapped in place

Had to notch the side panel a little, but it's a Meier, not a stocker so who cares?

Here it is finished!

Think I'll put some black fuel line on the switch itself to further disguise it.

OK ... I got a dumb question.

What's with a security switch? What's that?

Mine doesn't have a switch, see pic above.

When did they start coming with the switch?

Mine must be an oldie.

But so long as it works

The security switch is an extra option.  Not that my bike is all that much of a target, but the town I live and work in has more than it's fair share of trouble makers.
