Master Cylinder/Front Brake Swapping
« on: March 31, 2010, 11:45:36 PM »
Greetings,

I am in the process of talking with another member who has parts for sale and since I am not that knowledgeable about this, I turn to you for advice. Basically what I'm working with is my 75' CB400F which was subsequently stolen and dropped somewhere along the lines which resulted in the brake lever being snapped off and the Master Cylinder broken. Unfortunately, I don't have the funds to buy NOS parts and am looking for a swappable alternative from someone's used stash of parts. Looking through the Classifieds section has been a no-go for 400F specific parts.

This person I'm talking to is asking a very fair price for a proper working Master Cylinder complete to the caliper and rotor, both from a 1974 CB550 and a 1974 (I think) CB350F. I have cross referenced OEM part numbers (matches are in bold) and this is what I extrapolated:
Master Cylinder -
*350F #3867071-001
*400F #3867071-001

*550F #3867070-001

Brake Lever -
*350F #3876089-001
*400F #3876089-001
*550F #3876089-001

Caliper -
*350F #3866114-001
*400F #3866114-001
*550F #3866114-001

Hose A -
*350F #3866337-001
*400F #3866337-001
*550F #3866337-001

Hose B -
*350F #3866390-001
*400F #3866394-001
*550F #3866387-001

3-Way Joint -
*350F #3876433-001
*400F #3866456-001
*500F #3866456-001

Caliper Holder -
*350F #3866272-001
*400F #3866272-001
*550F #3866272-001

By comparing what I thought were the most crucial part numbers concerning the front brake system, I found that there are some discrepancies with a few of the parts listed above. Though, I don't know what those discrepancies are. Also to note, the rotors for all three of those respective bikes have different part numbers too. What I'm trying to do here is find the better fit of the two offered for my 400F. Questions arise like, can I simply use the 3-Way Joint supplied with either of these systems with no issues? Can I swap my 400F 3-Way Joint and will the brake hoses attach properly? Can I swap out the B-Hose from my 400F and have it work with the 3-Way Joint? How different is the 550F Master Cylinder from the 350F/400F?

If you have any knowledge on this matter, please chime in. I am excited to repair my bike!
