hey guys!  i was wondering if anyone has played with the idea of upgrading the magnets in the 750's alternator...

also, what would be a good way to really clean off the whole alternator assembly if it needs it.  this would help the electrical output slightly i believe and help to minimize any problems in the future. 

any advice or info is greatly appreciated!!  thanks guys!!

No magnets to upgrade. Nothing to clean in alternator. Clean the bullet connectors throughout the bike.
May help. You could upgrade to a 750A field coil for higher output. 290W vs 210W. Other major parts are identical. If you were to "pull" all those potential watts you could possibly cook your rectifier without upgrading. The 750A rectifier uses a different connector with 2 ground wires and 2 hot wires.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

No point in excessively cleaning the assembly since there's oil flinging around in there all the time.  Removing any rocks, bushes, and small animals should be enough ;)

fair enough!  thanks guys!!  i plan to do a full overhaul on the wiring on the bike, so i just wanted to make sure everything was up to par!!

The alternator on a 750 is relatively bullet-proof short of damage to the coil assemblies, such as in a left side spill.  :D

They can rust up if the engine is left open, outside in the weather, short of things like that the problems most often to be in the rectifier or regulator.    My bike always made good charging current, even when I first got it at it's most rust-bucket-iness.  The wiring harness was literally falling apart, but the alternator was still chugging away just fine.

For a real performance upgrade, you're looking at having the coil assemblies (field coil and stator coil) re-wound for higher output, but that's a non-trivial operation.  There are also a few aftermarket alternator or generator systems floating around out there for the 750.  www,cyclexchange.net carries a permanent-magnet exposed alternator system for the 750, for example.  Unsure off-hand about the output on that particular one.

The 750A field coil IS rewound. Larger wire, less resistance, more output. 7.2ohm on all 750's except 4.1ohm on the 750A. Stator coils are the same on all.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

the magnetic field is an electromagnetic one,,provided by the field coil,later bikes have a permanent magnetic field,provided by actual magnets,in the electromagnetic type the voltage to the field coil is adjusted,by the regulator, to increase or decrease the strength of the magnetic field,this is how the voltage output is regulated.,the regulators with permanent magnets dump excess voltage back to an earth.,the field is always the same.

i am STILL hunting for a field coil from a 750A best price i've found so far though is 99 dollars. i was kind of hoping to find someone that maybe needs a 4-1 header or maybe a nice stainless supertrapp that would do a partial or straight across trade. other than this one guy who swears he was a tech on these back in the 70's that emails me periodically to argue that there is NO difference in field coils and why the hell do i need more power anyways, am i stupid or something?  :P

if your not running massive quartz globes x 2,the standard gear in good condition is fine.maybe the "A"s had a different stator??the stator is receptive to the field,,more reception??

it might be "fine" but with the hotter coils and the H4 halogen headlight it will not charge as good. i know they might work but i dont give a rats ass about maybe, i believe in having a bit more than necessary rather than possibly a bit too less. like i said, i dont want the arguments about the why, i just want to DO it.

The 750A stators look identical and test out identical. Only difference I found other than the voltage regulator was the field coil.

The A actually uses the big old heavy rotor, at least the one I trip over every day does....7 pounder.. :o
