CB550 wiring woes.... '75 CB550 F
« on: April 01, 2010, 01:47:47 PM »
okay, long story short ive been blowing the main 15 amp fuse will sitting at idle. it happened 2-3 times in the last week or so. then last night it happened 3 times in a row. i originally thought it was due to some wires i had unplugged (which it still may be). the rear brake/turn sig/tag/etc are all unplugged. also there are a couple wires up front unplugged. there is a BK/R and G (ground) female ends from the main harness, a BR/W, W, BL male ends all loose from the handle bars... any one know off the top of their head where they go? i know BL and W are hi and lo headlamp but there are already matching wires plugged into the female ends...
i did find a couple loose turn sign wires loose from headlamp bucket and seemed to fix issue but i need to know where these other wires go. they are hot with headlamp on so i know they need to go somewhere. ill try and get some pics on here tonight.

i guess the story wasnt that short after all.
also the diagram i have is for a CB500 which may also lead me in the wrong way....

I don't think that the wiring of a 500 is that different from a 550.
Remember: All female connectors are possibly hot. They have a longer insulation and should not cause any shorts if they become loose as long as their insulation is not damaged.
Male connectors should not do any harm if they accidently touch ground potential, because they should not be hot if not connected.
Black/Red is the positive wire for the head lamp fuse. If shorted to ground it will blow the 15A fuse.
Brown/White is the juice for the tail and instruments light. This one's fused with 7A, so it should not blow the 15A fuse if shorted.
Brown/White also runs to the turn signal switch and further on into LightBlue/White and Orange/White which feed a second filament in the front turn signal bulbs. Mabye these are the turn signal wires that you are referring to. In my German 550F they do not have any purpose and are left unconnected.
White and Blue (Low/Hi beam) should blow the same 7A HL fuse if they are shorted to ground.
Unconnected green or brown connectors should not hurt.

Good wiring diagrams here   http://oldmanhonda.com/MC/WiringDiagrams/MCwiring.php

How are your fuses blowing?  Burned through in the middle or do they LOOK good, yet are shot?  Burned through means a short somewhere.  If they look good, then they are melting under the end cap due to loose or dirty fuse clips.  Clean the clips up nice and shiny.  Pinch them together so they hold the fuse so tight that you can't pull the fuse out with just your fingers.

If you have a short, put a 12v light bulb across your fuse clips while you chase the short.  If the bulb is bright, the short is active.  Start wiggling wires and unplugging stuff until the bulb goes dim or off.  I'm sure you are getting tired of pumping your paycheck into fuses!
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.
