'77-'78 CB750F Rear master cylinder problems
« on: April 04, 2010, 01:24:05 PM »
I’m trying to get the rear master cylinder on my ’77 CB750F apart for a rebuild resurrection.  Problem is the snap ring is corroded/rusted in place.  I soaked it in pb-blaster for 3 weeks and managed to clean all the crap off it to the point where I could see the snap ring.  Today I used a variety of picks to clean it up and open the holes in ths snap ring.  When I got my pliers out and attempted to remove it, one of the eye’s tore out.  Has anyone got any ideas on how I can remove it now?

If you have a decent rear master cylinder, please let me know.  I will be posting to the “parts” forum too.
Cheers!

I had the same problem. That turns a 1 hour long job into a long night.

I taped off the rest of the housing and sand blasted the end of it (where the snap ring sits on top of the big washer.
With all the rust and corrosion off you can better see what you need to do.

I then cut off the plunger and dug into the bottom inbetween where the ring sits on top of the washer with a sharpened screwdriver to loosen it then i worked it from behind the eyes on the snap ring. That worked for one of them.

I had another rear master that i had to cut the plunger off with a cut off wheel and then drill a bunch of holes into the washer so i could undermine the washer and pull it out. Then the snap ring was no issue.

Its no fun but a blasting booth makes it alot easier.   Good luck!
