Dyna s static timing
« on: April 04, 2010, 09:48:25 PM »
I am having issues static timing my dyna s and 3ohm coils on my 836 rebuild. I just want to make sure I have everything right.

My left coils top screw is conected to the blue wire and right to the yellow. The  black\white wire conects to each of the bottom screws. I connected the ignitions red line to my rear brake switch and yellow and blue lines connect to their coresponding colored wires.

When I try to statically time with the coils colored wires and a ground, the light just stays on regardless of the crank position.

Am I missing something?

I don't know anything about dyna ignitions, but if it doesn't have points, I'd be willing to bet you can't static time it with a light....
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

why not the magnetic trigger act in exactly the same matter, magnet on the crank goes over the switch it closes (making the coil fire) and when it passes it, the switch opens (breaking the connection).  You might want to make sure your advance is working properly and that your cam tension is proper as well.

Per Dyna S instructions, continuous light when setting timing indicates a wiring conx problem.
First off, make sure you've got switched 12V to the Red wire going to the Dyna S unit.

I connected the ignitions red line to my rear brake switch

I found an installation guide here:
http://www.mpsracing.com/instructions/Dynatek/DS1-1_1-2.pdf

As w1sa said, you need 12v to the red wire, I wonder if it's simply a matter of picking up on wrong side of brake switch?

btw, I really hate those splices like illustrated in that guide. At least a crimp connector or soldered joint is best imo.

I think Frostyboy is right. You may be hooked to the down stream side of the brake switch. See if the static timing light goes off when you apply the brake. The bottom primary coil terminal , along with the black/white wire, is a better place to attach the ignition's red wire. The kill switch will shut down the coils and the ignition modules.

Yup. Light goes off when peddle is pressed. Time to do some un-soldering.

Thanks

That did the trick. I was able to get the 1-4 time statically to the advance mark, but the 2-3 coils are firing between the f and the advance mark. Apparently other people have had this problem before.

Should be good enough to get her started.

If you open that link I posted for the installation guide, read step 5 on page 3. That should tidy up the timing for 2 &3.
Cheers.
