77' Lucky Rat
« on: October 10, 2011, 11:00:22 PM »
Hey everybody, my first Honda was a cafe CB550SS cafe about 12 yrs ago and I been riding and owned other bikes since. My last one was a Yamaha Maxim J700 20v doc but I needed to slow down! So when I found this one in a commercial residence I found the owner to find out that he's also the original owner. He sounded like he didn't want to sell it so I played it cool and when I finally ask he told me $250..I went to the ATM and called a tow truck. That's how I found Lucky Rat and I'm almost done but I have a couple of questions. I have a loose chain and my plan is to pull the tire back or take off a like or two, or weld a chain tensioner? The other is that I didn't ask him about the milage, the speedometer is original but I'm wondering if it has 700 or 7000? So far I grinded all the hinges, cleaned up the frame and fab some lowering rods. I bought a solo seat, headlight, ears, and a 4 to 1 vintage exhaust (I'm installing this week). I'm also buying some CB750 cabs, install jet kit, fab a shifter with a nob and finish the wiring. No paint or chrome other than whats original and nothing fancy, just a oldschool simple rusty cruiser.

The rods I fab have a bunch of drilled hole to lower or raise the bike when needed but its fine right now plus the rear tire is a little low. However I do have to cut the kick stand, right now it's sitting on weights lol.

I finally confirmed the milage and it's 780 original miles! I can see why he was not in the mood to sell it but he told me he couldn't ride it any more and its been sitting for a couple of years. I feel bad now about hacking it up but it needed a lot of $$ to restore plus its not my style. One thing for sure is that I'm proud to be the second owner and here's to another 30 to life!

That is a classic example of a tampered odometer; the only digit that should ever read halfway between 7 and 8 is the 1/10 mile.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

I thought the same so I took opened it and nothing loose or missing. The man is in his late 60's and bought when his early 30's. The only thing he did before parking it was install a new chain. The miles are low because he only rode it a couple of miles to his business from his home and nothing else. He ended up getting a knee surgery and just parked at the business park in front of his shop and I only found it because I was driving by with no For Sale sign or anything. I have some parts for sale (CHEAP!) that are still nice but rusty..Mothers polish can clean it up! P.M. ME

It's been reset; that's the only way that it could read between 70 and 80 miles...

Is the 2nd picture in your first post the bike as it was when you aquired it?
If so, the front tyre looks a bit shot for only 700 miles. ::) I'm with Scottly. ;)

The picture was taken as I found it. The tire has a lot of meat on the side but its old and I had to replace it because its cracked, hard, and bald on the sides but not the top. The rear tire however has been changed by him. As for the motor and everything else is clean but I'm installing a exhaust this week so I can look and see the heads and take it from there. Question..how do you reset a speedometer or take it apart without braking any brackets or ?

I installed the new exhaust and tank over the weekend but I still have some minor adjustments. Since theres really no answers for the speedometer, I'm going to install it back and take around the block to finish the rotation and see what happens. I keep you posted..Thanks!
