As far as using them at all, take it from someone who knows, the finned points cover is stronger and if you fall or tipover on the right it will protect the ignition. The stock sheet metal one will smash into the ignition leaving you stranded.

There is some truth there, as far as the cast cover being stronger, although it does stick out farther, and will hit sooner than the stock cover.
When I still had the cast cover on my bike, I had a kamikaze coyote jump into the right side of my bike at 60 MPH, and the first contact was with the point cover: it was shifted back by about 1/8", due to the bent mounting screws. I had a hell of a time getting it off...
BTW, the coyote lost!
