Removing Steering Tree from Frame on CB550
« on: January 22, 2006, 11:05:04 AM »
Howdy,
I've just pulled the engine out of my CB550. Now I want to strip front off the frame as well.
I've been looking it over, but I'm not quite sure what should come first.
What are the correct steps for doing this?

Thank you,

Just redid the front end, I prefer to remove the front end as a unit. Remove the top tree after the nut and keeper have been removed (will slide over the filler caps). If you are going to reuse the bearing balls, make sure you do not lose any. They will fall out when you slide out the tree. There are 37. 19 goe in the bottom, 18 in the top. Half the race will stay in the head. When you put it back together, make sure all the old grease is cleaned out (don't scrape with any thing metal). Coat with cold grease, stick the balls in the grease, and slide it back in. I put a milk case under the frame so I could rock it forward after I slid the tree back in. Took 15 minutes.

Thanks, for the info guys! I'm not sure that I really need to take the forks apart, so I like the idea of removing it as a unit.

Thanks for the heads up on the ball bearings... I sure would have been having fun chasing them all over the floor.

Best Regards,
