Ok...so I drilled regular bits...then tapped it with that standard tap with the hope that it would pull out threads. It didn't so I basically had a slightly off center threaded on the outside and threaded on the inside drinking straw...I got some of those tiny dremel diamond cutting bits...worked them some...then I just went for it with the M8-1.25 tap...

It pulled out some old threads and tapped new ones nicely. It was not perfectly centered so after some tapping it became too difficult to turn and I did not want to force it. So I check the bolt with the spigot and it was the slightest bit off but nobody but me would ever know, and it was like a millimeter shy of being flush...so (and this is the part you won't like) I cut off 2 threads on the bolt....

They do have blind taps they are for holes that bottom out. Also you can make one out of the tap you have by grinding some of it off.

It's in there...Its not going anywhere...It threads in nicely. There's two bolts holding on the spigot. I'm guessing the crush-gasket acts as kind-of a split-washer, adding tension and then the clamp sits flush with the bolt heads. I don't see how this isn't completely fine...

Should be fine. There's always the option to use a helicoil later in the unlikely event that the current repair fails.

Congrats on the repair. Cutting off that small amout of threads shouldnt hurt at all. Nice thinking outside the box.........Gary

Do exhaust spigots commonly come loose or blow out in general?

(I had studs until now, as you know) Thank you for all you comments BTW...I can't believe that took so frickin' long...Exhaust test fit coming up!

Man that is just tits.. I love those pipes.. A buddy of mine had them on his 71.. Been trying to buy the bike.. Collector rotted,but pipes look ok.. Bike had 72,000. Or 68,000 miles on itat end of 74 when I first saw it...
