The female Alternator rubber "sheaths" are rock hard...I had to burn them with a lighter to get them to soften up for a second, then they returned to their previous rock hard state...I have used that crimper before...will have to acquired one again. Thanks everyone.

So the bike is coming together. I put the carbs on today....but after getting the push and pull cables on...it's not snapping back very well at all....and not like last time when it was the cable....it seems like the actual bar that turns and opens and closes is really grabby and stiff....is this common for carbs that have been sitting for 2 years in a plastic box? I figure I'll take them apart and clean them....last time I just slapped them on and they worked fine

Do you guys have any opinions on sending carbs out for cleaning versus doing it yourself? This would be my first carb rebuild. I do not have an ultrasonic cleaner.

Carbs suck. I hate messing with carbs. There's a couple of tricks to getting the PD carbs back together correctly. I've documented the choke linkage here:

+1 for sending it to James.

I invested in a US cleaner because I anticipated more than one build, and I also like to clean my cam towers and a few other things ultrasonically. They can be cleaned without one using various dips and such, but I'd hate to leave a possibility of having to redo it. IMHO, for a DIY clean, US cleaner is a must.

I wish...I am close. I had my carbs cleaned once years ago...and 2 years ago I just put them on and they worked...this time however, they are sticking and not in the cable (last time cable routing caused some snap-back issues)...so I figure I'll send then out to get a proper cleaning...I am afraid to mess with them

The clamps were made by member 754...

The clamps were made by member 745...

My CRs are due for an ultrasonic cleaning. I just had the GL front inspected and resprung by Matt Wiley at Race Tech (for free!) but the carbs are not doing their normal job. I'm taking them in to Jay's shop for a cleaning. Stuck with the 550 for now.

PS My RC51 still needs a new home!

2 quarts of oil are in the bike. I forget, do I just wait for it to drain into the main case (the oil tank is full currently) or do I have to pump it all through with the Kickstarter to get the remaining oil into the bike?

I like to open the valve caps and squirt oil all over the cam and lifters before a first start, I just make sure my pint holding oil can is empty before I start it.

My carbs are still out being cleaned and rebuilt....got the rear wiring finished today and got the rear brake linkage on....getting closer

Congrats, yeah oil on top end is best...the oil tank shouldn't drain down to the sump or you have issues that need addressed.

This is the it running for the very first time this rebuild.

Strangely, it was had to start a few hours later...but it did start

I put it through all the gears while on the center stand.

Things to do: Button up the bird's nest, front brakes, front fender, speed/tach cables, new tires would be a good idea...

MCRider...I don't understand what/who #3 is?
