Very cool!  Is there ever any LA area meet/greet's?

Aside from crowds congregating at Neptunes Net (Malibu), the Rock Store (Malibu Canyons), Newcombs Ranch (Angeles Crest Hwy), Deus Ex Machina (Venice), there are also vintage events -- VVMC every third Sunday and Vintae Bike Orange County every second Sunday.  LA Motorcyclist http://www.lamotorcyclist.com also posts events.

Chris the lack of meeting opportunities in LA must be devastating...

Bike looks great and it is too bad there isn't a great exhaust header like that available for the 550.  But, I guess it is not as free flowing with the sharp bend... a little back pressure is a good thing.

Saw a demo on YouTube where they beat the crap out of a set of perf headers to see if it negatively affected dyno perf to clearance bend for fitment. Answer was NO. It really was surprising to see but the numbers didn't lie. It was EngineMasters if I recall correctly.

Well until I figure out how to get that Black-Bomber gauges working I'm going to be running this temporarily. The bike feels too slow, but I suspect I am not revving it high enough, especially after years on a V-twin Monster. Wired this on last night. Can't wait to try it out. I run a Ram mount for the speedo with GPS.

I think the guts of the Black bomber speedo are too messed up and it's not calibrated correctly at all. I think the longer term plan will be to retrofit the headlight bucket with some smaller new gauges or maybe that Motorgadget Mini....but I really like the look of analog gauges

you could send the Black Bomber gauge to a speedo repair place like Palo Alto Speedometer repair facility and they could rebuild it and probably even regear it to work with your bike, giving them the ratio it needed and a count of the factory gears from the front axle. Or send them the speedo gear assembly from the front axle along so they could count it themselves since it is a helical gear.

A wireless or wired bike speedo (used or new) can give you an accurate speedo to use in the meantime...
I picked up a nice wireless unit that was used and in excellent shape from a cyclist who upgraded his. It is a Sigma.

Great to have a more local vendor. I haven't heard of them. I just tried to call my friend Dave Hargreaves at Cerberus Motorcycles in SD to get his $0.02, but he was unavailable.

Dave just called me back.  He said Foreign Speedo has been in SD Forever and does good work.  Dave has also done exactly what you are trying to do -- he fitted the same style dual sweeper gauge into a CB750K7.  Call him if you want to pick his brain.  (619) 980-9377

I've had good results from Palo Alto speedo on cars but it was years ago...I presumed incorrectly they could do it.  Sorry about that...
Would be good to send the Foreign Speedo info to Glenn and ask him to add it to the FAQ.  I'm glad you found a place that could handle it.
Odds are they could even refurbish the face if it needs it.

I am leaking out of my oil line connection (9 or 10) I'm not totally sure yet...I originally thought it was the oil tank over flow...but after routing a hose from it...I' am fairly sure it's the oil lines where they connect to the tank...are there crush washers in the connection that are not in the diagram (where the line meets the tank).

It gets hot there...could I use teflon? I will try tightening them more...any insight into this leak?

thanks

EDIT: Sorry I see the washers now....I will replace those

Love this bike man, That pipe.... I've never seen another like it... what kind is that? I have a stock 78K that I'm going to really get into this winter...been gathering parts for quite a while now and it's going to emerge a whole other animal in the Spring....(hopefully). ha-ha.

I've watched your thread since you first bough the bike and loved that gold leaf trim but The super sport tank looks awesome too. Do you know if we're able to use a Super sport tank on our 78K frame with the stock seat? I think it is longer so I wasn't sure.

Anyway, I'm also super jealous that you got to go to Born Free man, Im all the way over in CT and wish we had something comparable on the east coast. Awesome bike buddy, keep up the good work!!!

Every now and then I check in here to catch up on some of my favorite builds, it's good for my heart to see this one running and out in the world again!

It's funny, when I saw those header clamps on your bike, my first thought was "754 would dig those", then a few posts later I see that he made 'em. ;)

Just one of many nice little touches on this machine.  Good work!

It's funny, when I saw those header clamps on your bike, my first thought was "754 would dig those", then a few posts later I see that he made 'em. ;)
I forgot about those.  Frank is a man of several talents.

Thanks everyone...I am loving the bike...Still sorting our the tach/speedo and some leaks

Are the oil washers a "crush" type? I need OEM? I don't have a tach seal at all...and I am now hoping my head leak is really a tach-seal leak (that would be the best news! I should do a powder test)

EricCB750 sent me a PM question but I figured I'd just answer it here to keep the thread alive and the knowledge public...

Hey Buddy, My name is Eric and I too am a SOHC nut, I own a 78K and a 78F. I've followed your build since you started and always loved that darn exhaust!! I have a couple questions if you don't mind. I was wondering if when you mounted the super sport tank, did you have to modify your seat in any way for the SS tank to fit? I think they are a bit longer so I wasn't sure. I have a nice one and the 78F is nowhere near ready so I was thinking of tossing it on my 78K....

I also saw that you had your 78K honed? NOt sure if you went with an oversize at all but mine are definitely still within Spec. I wanted to see where you got your rings? Did you use OEM honda (Kind of hard to find) or some aftermarket ones? I've seen them on CB750 Supply and a couple other places but it's hard to tell what brand they are....I've heard the RIK ones are really good and obviously OEM ones too.

I was luck enough to score a brand spaking new set of 392 pistons in the 0.25 Oversize....only problem... no rings... So when I freshen mine up I'm going to need a set. Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it.

I did have to cut the stock seat pan. I actually did not do it perfectly and wish it was about 0.25" or so longer/closer to the seat...it could have snugged up better...nobody notices but it drives me crazy. I have no idea how an F seat mounts to a K...but for sure you need a shorter K seat pan with an F tank on a K frame.

I have no idea of what rings I used...I was a long time ago...I will try to dig it up...I must have documented it somewhere? My pistons are the stick one that came with the bike.

the pipe is called a triple-A. Info on them can be found here http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=85867.25

I still can't believe how high this bike revs...game changer with the bar mounted tach. Saving my penning to get the Bomber gauges rebuilt/calibrated...hopefully soon

I think the oil line gaskets are aluminum, meaning they probably should not be reused.
I made a few for myself from hard aluminum, then tried annealing. But overheated a few.
Important thing is to run you finger over edge of fitting,  make sure there's no  burrs, and washer is clean.
I think the side of the washer against the hose is flat so you might be able to turn washer over after cleaning up surface with sandpaper.

Thank you 754!

I will order the proper ones...that leak is annoying...it goes on the swing-arm then over to the left side chain tensioner and some gets on the tire which can't be good for grip...

Now for the tach seal....I don't have one yet (ordered)...but is it obvious which side faces up?

As for Eric's question on the seat, when I switched to the F tank, I remounted the brackets on the seat pan so they adjusted for the longer tank length.

Flat side of seal goes to outside,  don't use a screw to hook and pull it out..the part against tach shaft must be smooth..found out the hard way.
