So thanks to Don, I have hired a mechanic to hopefully re-do my motor once and for all. He came and picked the bike up on Saturday and I am very excited to have a pro go over it.

From our conversation I now suspect that my engine-studs have been stretched out and I was unable to actually torque the head to spec. Also my oil-pump is allowing the side tank to drain all the way into the sump, so when I checked my oil and thought it was low, I most likely over-filled the bike thus causing the many new leaks that occurred on my final ride of my last attempt. I may have installed the rings incorrectly resulting in the blow-by...plus the shaft seal not sealing + possibly one of the cam-tower seals not sealing...anyways. I learned a lot, but apparently not enough yet...looking forward to updates as he goes through the bike. Thank you again Don :)

UPDATE: So I have an experienced mechanic going through my bike to see why it is leaking. Turns out the cheap Harbor Freight torque wrench probably has a lot to do with it. He told me that my engine studs were at 16lbs and that some of the smaller hardware was just finger tight. Lesson learned.

Also, if you have been following my never ending build, the shaft seal leak wasn't a shaft seal leak...turns out there's an O-ring on the timing shaft that I never changed out...he put in a new one and that leak was gone!

I know money doesn’t grow on trees, but the 1 thing that I will tell you is, good tools are an investment. If you are doing anything that matters, then you owe it to yourself to use a quality tool. Torque wrenches are critical tools. Their calibration is important, how you treat them is important, else everything you do with them is suspect.

Save up, and spend once on a professional grade torque wrench. You will forever be glad you did.

What the link is, a $500 digital torque wrench with 5#-200# range, multiple units of measure, automatic shutoff, and, an angle gauge for torquing out of position. There are times when you need to torque to a spec, then x* past. I have used that torque “angle” feature in my truck countless times, and can’t for the life of me understand how I lived without it.

It is a pricey wrench for sure, but their next model down “Tech Wrench” was in my box for a decade before.

So the motor is out again and the head and jugs are off.

I considered a full-on port and boring to 836cc, etc....but that just gets out of my price range fast (new rods, piston, bore, cam, port, etc = EXPENSIVE)

But since it is apart and there will be a MILD PORT...are there any GO FAST mods that are somewhat economical that I could do? A MILD CAM has been mentioned ($200-$250ish) would that be a good idea? (I already have APE valve springs) its a stock bore...open to all suggestions

You could always buy my Wiseco 836 kit, CX7 cam, Stage 4 ported head, HD chains, tensioners and studs, lightened and balanced crank with Cycle X Super Rods, and balanced rotor.

Put your rods money into your head. You should be safe at 836 with stock rods.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

sure...get a cam...but the really good cams require more compression than stock.  Upping the compression is good for several ponies in it's own right...but the cheapest way to raise compression is new pistons, and then you might as well be doing a big bore!

Seriously though, every part on you bike can be tuned for more power.  Don't just fix broken stuff, improve it.

Fast, Dependable, or Cheap...you only get 2 out 3.  Which do you want?
If it works good, it looks good...

To get the best gains out of a cam, you will want to port it and go with higher compression pistons.

Porting will help in any case -- even if just to remove casting marks and improve flow.

Some of the other guys may balk, but spending a lot of dollars on trying to get a real-go-fast CB750 may disappoint.  It wont be fast compared to the Duc you used to have.

Would I spend $2K to have my CB go as fast as my Kaw 900? No way!

Just bore to 836, get it reliable and leak free...

It is equally if not more important to improve the handling (and brakes) than increase your power.

That's why the RC51 has such great stock brakes!

Race-tech is saying I need new "inner fork tubes" to guarantee the forks not leaking. They are saying they will use Forking by Frank and that the tubes are $375...That is crazy high don't you think? http://franksforks.com/

I just talked to the Race Tech sales person and they are saying the Frank's Forks are built from scratch and will take 3 weeks...That sounds insane for stock fork tubes. Any tips on where to buy 1978K for tubes?

Inner tubes are more expensive than liters, and personally, 3 weeks seems about right. I bought a few outer sets and they were $260 for 550s
