Thinking of joining the owners club
« on: April 05, 2010, 03:06:22 PM »
I have a chance of buy a 78 CB 750 F for little to no money.
I have always liked what these bike can turn into. What I really am thinking is a Brit Cafe Bike.
What am I getting into ???  How much work is this going to Cost $$$
The owner has had it for 18yrs and says he gave it to his son in law 10 yrs ago and it just sat in a shed.
He said the bike did run but it needs some work like a carb rebuild a Battery and some fresh gas.
The bike has new tires and looks like it was out of the weather in a shed for sure. but not over all that bad.
 ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

Well Should I go for It ???

To say how much it needs would be a guess at best for us. One thing most of us would agree on is that it will need:
Carbs cleaned (not necessarily rebuilt but you won't know until you get in there
New Battery
Generally many electrical gremlins that most can be fixed with a thorough going over of all connections and cleaning them
New tires - even if they look good at 10 years old I wouldn't trust them!
Tank cleaning (maybe even a liner depending on condition but unless there sre holes an acid wash usually is enough)
new plugs and over all tune up (set timing, valve adjust, cam chain adjustment, oil and filter)

Also just as a heads up timing advance tends to stick after sitting that long in addition rubber tends to dry out etc so you may need more than at first glance.

Having said that though, most of these items are virtually free (except tires and battery) assuming you can do the basic maintenance yourself. I have found that most often carbs can be saved without rebuilding but some people always rebuild them.

I say go for it. Especially if the price is right. Obviously there would be additional costs associated with cafe'ing it but to get a decent runner assuming it isn't totally bodged usually is fairly cheap and can even be fun! (assuming you find busted knuckles, drinking beer and lots of cursing fun!!)

50 bucks?!?!?! And you took the time to ask us???

You absolutely can not lose for 50 bucks. Even if you get it home and relaize it is a basket case there is several times that in parts you could sell off!

I sort of assumed by your description but I should have asked....the engine does turn over and it does have compression right? Although even if the answer was no then it would still be worth more than 50....

P.s. I personally would put the cafe plans on hold. I don't want to knock them but in my own opinion I think we are on the down side of that fad....not quite as far as choppers but getting there. I would ensure you get a good strong runner first and then tackle the cosmetics. I would bet my arse that you will spend far more on the cafe look then you will on getting the bike running strong.

Go pick it up! Depending on how much of the mechanical items you can tackle, investing about $500 would net you a bike worth at least about $1000.
This info will help you convince your wife!

One more thing, make sure it has a title or you might have a challenge getting it registered or sold.

Good Luck

OK I'll try the guy for the title but if I get stuck with this thing you may see me selling parts in the classified.

Where abouts are you? there may be guys in your neck of the woods that can help with the resurrection....also there are title services out there that can help and depending on your State or Province it may not be too bad to get the proper papers from your DMV.
