I had a few piano lessons at 5, then started trumpet when I was 7. My first good horn was a Selmer Signet cornet, then a Mendez Olds. Still have it, and a nice Reynolds from the 30s and a couple others I picked up along the way. Marching band, Jazz band and Orchestra in high school, joined the Sacramento Youth Band cuz I wanted to play more, marched in every local parade twice, and state and county fairs all over CA that the high school didn't go to. Actually played in Lodi 3 or 4 times and didn't get stuck. Played in a Latin band called "Los Uniques", 5 sets 4 nites a week, plus wedding receptions and a some radio broadcasts "Live from Arturo's Quiet Village" in San Jose, for about 7 months before I decided to go back to school at the Ca Maritime Academy. Pretty much dropped it until 85 when I played at S.Lk. Tahoe CC to try to get it back a little. Picked it up now and then over the yrs and my kids got excited about it. My daughter got her first job in high school so she could pay for her own lessons, then switched to tenor sax. My son never had a private lesson, but learned from his high school teacher well enough to get an audition with the Marines (not easy to do), went thru the military music school, he's now a Sgt and lead trumpet in the band at MCRD San Diego. He's played at the Marine Museum opening, SuperBowl, Rose Parade... A dad couldn't be prouder.
I started playing guitar about 12, and have kinda kept up with it, it's easier to keep yer chops when it's not so much of a physical workout. My guitar playing will always improve but I don't think I can ever get back to where I used to be on the trumpet. I could probably get my range back, but I don't see any more of those 6 or 7hr wedding reception gigs in my future..Still pick it up and have some fun with it tho...
