Back together and charging...

I like the new tank but the old seat doesn't fit, and really doesn't look good at all to me anymore, albeit comfortable as a couch.  Finally got the carbs back on and the Start button sorted.

O yea- don't litter.

Yea, I love those F tanks. I have the same issue, my seat does not fit. I ordered a new cafe seat cover and I am hoping to make it fit with some alterations..

Ahhhh.. that's what it is. I'll have to reread the FAQs.


New issue: I got quite a shock when I went to use the start button last... Seems like the wires are touching the casing/handlebars? I'm going to open it up tomorrow and check it out after I bang out the stock seat pan.

it's cheaper then a snap on or a matco .. and built better then a craftsman ..

i love love love this socket ... the hole at top is nice for putting a screwdriver through when/if you can't get the ratchet in there

Thanks.. I am liking it so far. Some one on our block said it kinda looks like a bike version of a stock car, I guess I can live with that.. ;)

I've torqued the nuts way beyond specification, replaced the gaskets, and still have a series of major leaks...

My advice...waht I have done inthe past....

Put a drip pan under it and work on the rest of it.....give yourself time to stand back and think about it....then little by little address the leaks....you'd be amazed at how doing this will work itself out! ;)

It's a 30+ year old bike.  Short of a complete nut and bolt restoration, it is going to have quirks and character. ;D

Don't know for sure, however my Mac 4 into 1 do require them and the gaskets..

be careful with that my man ... breaking a stud off in the head is a serious nightmare

be careful with that my man ... breaking a stud off in the head is a serious nightmare

Luckily I got out all of the studs... unfortunately, the bike came to me with one stripped hole in the block... Where can I get a proper Heli-coil? and replacement hardware, including those OEM split flanges?

they flanges have to come from the dealer  (ebay) ....the heli-coils and bolts you can get at your local hardware store or autozone/advance auto

Hmm- excellent!

I'm confused about the flanges though... I've read that the Kerker doesn't need the flanges, but common sense would say there is a gap that needs filling and the stock flanges would do that.

I am pretty sure all SOHC4's require the flanges..  At least the 750 and 550's for sure. I am not 100% sure about the others. I have seen sites that claim you don't need them, however after some one (usually from here) buys them they end up having to get them. I think its miss information..

Some one correct me if I am wrong please..

Haha- probably mostly city streets, some highway driving to the campsites, fire roads, possibly some true adventure riding if I get her running true enough.

That whole "Be Prepared" thing really stuck in me from Cub Scouts.  ;D

Sure you can fit Enduro tires on these wheels but a few things to consider about dual sport tires (Ive just got through the same exhaustive search):

1. The Saharas will wear out faster if only street riding - as low as 1500 miles have been reported and high is 5000 miles (for rear).
2. They are noisier than stock on the highway.
3. On the plus side they are apparently good in the rain and decent handling on corners.

Ive been looking at Shinkos (much cheaper and getting a good rep), Dunlop K70s (similar to you have already), Mefo Explorers (may be hard to find the right size though), Tourances (getting expensive here but longer life) and check out TKC-80s - again have a good rep but getting the right size may be an issue. I think I am going to try the Shinkos since they are so cheap - between $40 -$65/tire.

Excellent! Thanks Andy- I'll definitely look up that Trans Mass Trail once I get some tires.

I'll keep you all posted on what happens... maybe I can justify the frequent tire changes if I buy Shinkos, or at least plan to be off the road more than on- or build a true enduro further on down the road. :D

Is that a noisy cam chain? Sure sounds like it... The sound is altered when I get into shift into gear, just  a bit...

There are a few neighbors using lawn tools in the background, but that slapping at idle is distinct.

Would appreciate any insight you have. I loosened the lock nut on the tensioner but the screw/gear wouldn't turn... I imagine it's pretty gummed up in there. I ran about a liter of fuel thru it and it's getting better and better, but the noise won't go, and I don't want to ride it like this. What do you suggest?

have you set the tappets ...kinda sounds thats what slappin around ... the tappets in my 550 like to move every 100 miles or so (very annoying)

Sounds like she is idleing pretty low also.. It should be at 1000 rpm I believe yours sounds a bit low, tho I could be wrong..

Very interesting... I have not set the tappets. I will asap and get back you y'all... was kind of perplexed as to why the cam chain wouldn't adjust itself, but maybe it didn't have to. Sounds like a chain slapping tho... of course, it's the first time I've heard a 1974 cb550 run.  ;D
