Bill, do a search on NEDRA, the National Electric Drag Racing Association; I used to follow this stuff years ago. Guys were beating Vipers in the late 90s! Puts our wedges to shame!

these machines (and now the e-bike i'm dreaming of building) are pretty neat stuff; but i.c. powered anything can't be beat for sound, feel, and smell.

I'm building an electric mini-bike right now! Just for grins, of course, and to go back and forth to my shop, 3 blocks from home. I wouldn't give up my 413 for anything! Just put a set of 440 Source aluminum heads on it, but I haven't been able to drive it yet. (It's in a 61 VW bus that I've had since the early '70s!  )

i saw a video of the builder of that bike doing a burnout for a television news crew and the dumbass didnt know what he was doing, it launched and he and the bike toasted a mini van

he wasnt hurt badly so it was funny

i have to ask being an air cooled vw freak. are you running the vw trans with the reduction boxes still? what is the adapter made out of? that had got to be one squirrely launch! and i thought my 65 bug with 360 rwhp was a beastie!

Hey Bucky. I didn't use the VW trans; I have an 8 3/4 rear axle, shortened torque-flite trans, and a 10.5" long drive-shaft. The motor is mounted in the middle of the bus.

Man, 360 RWHP out of a bug motor??? I assume it's blown or turboed?

Oh yeah, in the video, you can hear someone say "it stuck on" or something like that, after the accident. Still, the dude should have at least been wearing a helmet before doing a stunt....

I'm building a drag racer based on a Yam XJ600 rolling chassis and using similar components (motor/batt/controller) to the TTXGP bikes. Currently aiming at a 12sec/120mph run as a baseline. Going much quicker than that needs a LOT more energy (= money) to deliver the acceleration orce and to overcome the wind drag.

I'm starting out at that target because the best in the UK at last years Alternative Energy Racing (Santa Pod) was Kinston University at 15sec/92mph, so I'm aiming at get some way ahead of that. This years event is 2 weeks time. I won't be ready for that, so I'm gong along to have a nose around and see what performance they're turning in at the mo. If anyone's moved some way ahead of those figures I might have to up my calcs.

I agree. The electric is fun and I like dabbling in the technology but do I miss the noise of an engine though, can't beat that sound.

94 x 94 type 1 motor, cases for trans and motor from autocraft, turbo pirated from a 93 300zx and a predator carb. i narrowed the rear torsion housings by 4" on either side and widened the wheel wells a bit to fit an 8" slick up inside the fenderwell. with an all steel body and glass windshield and door glass (lexan quarter windows and rear windscreen) it ran a best of 10.03 with DOT approved tires and pump gas (94 octane) it was red primer and all the tailpipe it had was an 18" long 5" diameter bananna pipe right off the turbo and exiting through a hole in the decklid, no baffles of any kind. and with the stock front wheels and stockers widened to 9" out back it looked pretty stock to alot of corvette and mustang drivers. i made my gas money and then some racing it across the gandy bridge from St Pete to Tampa. i worked at fisher buggies when they were still on Gandy Blvd back in the early 90's, building motors and transaxles. i miss having a boost ride

Top speed: depends on if you are going uphill or downhill, so far, I have not found the upper limits...

i always dug the air cool vw. grew up with them as one the family cars; my grandmother owned several and i use to get her to take me with her to get them serviced at the dealership. loved that place and the sound and smell of a good german car. her last one before going rabbit was a '74 non-super beetle- bought new. darn thing got 't' boned and she got a broken collar bone. 

you might say news of her accident was... shocking?

How do you keep the back from folding up under the front?
 

My friend who has a 1964 Thunderbolt and a built-up 427 SOHC Ford with 2 4bbls, 315 cams and 11:1 CR had to add an additional 1.5" perimeter frame after some really hard passes pushed the midwaist frame sections outward and shortened the wheelbase almost 2" one fine summer weekend...

This guy has no less than 4 Thunderbolts in his stable, and a beautiful copy of my (not-so-beautiful) '67 LTD 2-dr fastback. We both started with the 390 "H" engines in these cars, but he installed the 428's crank and rods to make his into the 11:1 CR 410, then added a 4-bbl (the "H" has a deuce). Last I talked with him, he thought he had found a virgin SOHC kit and was trying to bring it to Denver to install on the LTD to make it a 410 SOHC (but has to make a cutom hood to fit it). He wants me to come over and fix up his suspension like mine so he can drive it with one hand when the right foot is down (I had to seriously rework mine for that!).

Ecosse, thanks for the White Zombi video!! John "Plasma Boy" has been on top of the electric scene for about 10 years, as I recall. BTW, he got the nick-name, Plasma Boy, after he dropped a machined brass battery terminal onto a 300+ volt battery pack, and a plasma arc, resembling ball lightning(from his description), rose into the interior of the White Zombi, just prior to the APS electric races in PHX....

Hey HM, actually, the VW bus is a very rigid structure, a combination monocoque/frame welded unit, that I beefed up. A stock, '61 bus could carry something like a half a ton or more.
