I am getting ready to start shaking out my bike now that i've got her back together. I ordered an EK xring chain but it won't be here for a short bit. I lost the orings for the masterlink on the chain that came with the bike. Can I get away with just putting the masterlink on without the orings if I lube it. I'd only be doing this for a short couple days. Am I just asking for some serious trouble? Has anyone done this?

Thanks

Brandon
Sure it's for sale! How much you ask?? Well, how much are you willing to pay??? Now triple it, that's the price!

I wouldn't do it.  I've never tried before, but it seems like the side-to-side play in that link could cause the clip to pop off.

Weigh the benefit of getting to ride for those couple of days versus the possibility of punching a hole in the engine case and having to do a total rebuild.  Is it worth the risk?

Can you find some o-rings at a hardware store that will work?

That was what I was thinking, and was my concern.

I'll have to see. I have a huge oring assortment i got from harbor freight but I don't think any of them are narrow enough. I guess I'll just have to be patient.

Thanks,

Brandon

  • "Lady, I've heard it all before"!
I've put a few "O" ring chains on Brandon, I fitted one to my 650 Custom and one to my son's CBR400RR and both came with the new "O" ring link in the packet.
Not sure which brand you are using but seems a given that you get new joiner link with the chain.

I have found the cheapest chains here in NZ to be around $80 (about $50 US) and boy do you have to get it right.
Hey on that note Brandon, can you count the number of teeth on your sprocket as you probably have the back wheel off by now.
I'm thinking of changing the gearing on my 79 650 as it's mighty fast around town over short distances (just like the cops wanted) but screams for a 6th gear on the highway.
I need to know what standard 650's are running, if you can give me the front sprocket count too that would be great.....cheers.....Hush.
