New front brakes are constantly rubbing
« on: January 10, 2012, 10:01:28 PM »
I just replaced my front brake the other day and is constantly in contact with the rotor now. When the front tire is lifted off the ground it does not spin freely and constantly squeaked when I rode for about 6-10 miles before stopping. I replaced the brake fluid as well. Do I just need to break it in more will it put my rotor in danger?

Thanks
Dan

I had this problem when I changed out my pads on my 550 too. There was a white circular ring inside the caliper, seperating the pad from the caliper. I removed the white ring and no more rubbing

I thought that was a gasket or something. I just pug it on the new one.  I'll try it out this week. I hope that's it

the plastic shim on some aftermarket pads is not needed usually it says on the type of pads don't lose the ring as you may need it in the future for other or original pads  some of the pads also require dressing of the edges to keep them from hanging in the bore and not retracting

dress the edges of the pads at an angle so there is is not a square edge when they hit the rotor. scuff the pads. clean all the glaze off of your rotor with medium emery paper.a nd get a 99 cent package of disc brake pad "anti squeal" from your local auto parts place. fought my brake squeal for a while and now all is quiet!!

That's what I'd guess too...the inboard pad hasn't been adjusted to the rotor per the manual so is too close.

I did read here that pads contaminated by the brake fluid squeel like that. I changed my pads and scrubbed the disk with scotch bright and xylol. It stopped.
