1976 550F slip on exhaust
« on: March 26, 2009, 09:52:42 PM »
could anyone verify that the OD on OEM 4-1 headers on a 76 550F is in fact 2 1/4 inches?

i'm wondering if what i have was resized by the PO or replaced altogether. the only place i have found a muffler to fit is denniskirk and there is no diameter listed, just says works w/OEM.

my local shop was hard pressed to find a straight up replacement for that size OD, and suggested using a reducer and then going w/a emgo shorty. how will a reducer affect the exhaust flow?

any other thoughts on what else might fit...i'm all ears. is F fitament different from K? or 500 vs 550 vs 750 etc?
i know they must be, just not sure what fits what.

thanks much

i'm still on the search to complete my exhaust. have the headers heat wrapped now, just need a muffler

anyone know of a slip-on muffler that will go onto a 2.25 inch OD collector?
didn't think it'd be this difficult to locate

i'm prepared to do a reducer (ie have one made) that will take the 2.25 down to 1.75, and then fit to that.

i've also thought about just getting a long exhaust tip that will slip over and then engineering a baffle to the inside of that.

i really thought that one of these aftermarket exhaust companies would have something...2bros, vance&hines, etc

any help on this subject would be appreciated.

I don't know if you still need this information, but I have the OEM exhaust system on my 1976 CB550F off, and the OD of the header collector is 2-3/32 inches to 2-1/8 inches. There is a gasket that goes around the collector that has an OD of about 2-5/16 to 2-3/8". The OEM muffler clamped around the gasket.

Hey Suelzer,

I've been looking for the same thing.  MAC has a megaphone exhaust slip on for about $165.  They don't list measurements but it's supposed to be a stock replacement.

That's about it, hard to find anything else that will work.

i actually wound up finding an original Dunstall reverse megaphone. got a local exhaust guy to fix me up a small piece of pipe to hook up to the collector.

i have an extra of the same Dunstall muffler along with a bunch of extra parts i'll be selling off if anyone's interested
