650 oil leaks
« on: April 07, 2010, 05:46:19 PM »
I have an 82 CB 650 SC 17K miles on it, has spent most of its life sitting around, I have been riding it for  about a year now. Rebuilt carbs and other stuff.

After  riding I notice oil coming from the end of the gear shift lever, usually runs out of the end and drips down onto the exhaust and then onto the floor (ugh) this has just started doesn't leak alot just enough to be annoying. The bike also has other leaks but nothing very bad, probably needs a new set of valve cover gaskets

Any help would be appreciated

Tom

Either a shift shaft seal or the oil pump cover.  Both are relativly easy. Need to check under the cover to see what one.  The oil press sending unit is under there too.

The shift shaft seal is pretty easy, too.  I had a slow leak until somehow I managed to have it blow itself out and start pooling oil under my bike.  Anyway, long story short, the seal's $5 from Honda... you take the shift lever and cover off and expose the sprocket/shifter/etc, pull the old seal out, clean everything up around it, put packing tape over the splines to protect the new seal, put the new seal on and use either a piece of PVC or a big socket and evenly push the seal into place.  Done.

If it ends up being the oil pump, though, I'm all ears because I have a slow leak there, too. ::)

If its just the cover its no biggie.  It was on he one I fixed and on the one I need to fix.  Just the 3 screws and a oring to replace.  I think i just used a little rvt. Yes big nono spare me the preaching.   ;D      If its leaking where it mates to the engine there are 3 orings of diff sizes.

If it is the oil pump cover, I took the old one with me to local hydraulic place and it was only 4 trips before we found one that worked. The proper one is of course metric, and was never available from Honda.
