loss of power+ smoking air filter
« on: April 09, 2010, 01:35:32 PM »
So I took the bike out on the highway earlier, and had an extreme loss of power. I was able to get it home, felt the pipes and 1 and 2 were much cooler (like a 2 count-touch!) and the 3+4 were super super hot. Anyway, I figured it might be the new gas lines I had the shop pop on there for me when I have the carbs synced. and it seems, sure enough, the line feeding 1+2 was kinked, unkinked it and saw fuel flowing through the filter. Ran it, and much much better. But then when I shut it down, I saw a few whisps of smoke come out of the filters that were the problem before. Anything to really worry about? Maybe it was from no fuel getting to them earlier? Maybe it was the crap-ton of seafoam i put in my gastank (with a full tank of gas)? Any help is much appreciated as always!

we need more info...
what maintenance procedures have been done by you/shop?
could be a host of things.  how much seafoam did you add?
how do you know the carbs are right?
what do your plugs look like?

Cleaned carbs fully. Carbs synced, Uh, I should have known better but I let my buddy pour in the seafoam, and he dumped in like half or 2/3 the can. Havnt pulled the plugs yet, im letting both the bike and the weather to cool down (I'm in Tampa FL and its burning up outside) But I would asume the plugs on that side will be a bit white now since they had no fuel for a bit, and they were new yesterday. Also, maybe I need to adjust the valves? could be pushing exhaust back through the intake?

is it also possible that the bike just happened to stop with the intake valve open so some exhaust crept through? ill run it in a bit and see if any comes out while its running.

Edit: just tokk it for another short run, turned off the gas at the petcock and then ran it, turned the gas back on and the fuel flowed beautifully through the filters! awesome. There was no whisp of smoke this time, but I did notice a very very slight popping (backfire?) from the exhaust when coming down from high rpms. Lean condition? I just had the carbs synced!
