Someone needs to map one of Mike Riecks heads and get a few made up, or even a totally different design for performance... very nice bit of gear...

Yes, while aluminum cuts quite nicely and easily, to get the level of finish that they were showing, I'd be willing to guess 30 to 40 hours+ including the changeover to the other side in the fixture.

Often the Machine makers like to  talk about machining time, and tool-change speed.

Some parts are truly impressive, time in which it is done.. I cant see the finished product, but it sounds fairly complex, usually meaning long a time cutting..

For those having trouble seeing the video, here's the finished product.  Looks like they did another helmet too.

I would like to know why that would be $18,000 dollars worth?  I have a billet block coming from Mrieck with Nikasil bores and it cost a 10th of that...

Well lets see....this is all assuming that these pieces were done at the machine builder facility, using top of the line equipment and professionals...there's design time, programming time (and the cost of related software and equipment to run the programming software), perishible tooling costs, setup costs, material costs, debugging and reworking (unless they're really REALLY good even with computers doing the programming)...labor cost for the machine operator(s)...
It all adds up in a hurry.

Hi Steve, yes i understand the process but these days from what i have seen, they use laser equipment to "map" the piece being machined and a lot of the old processes are therefore removed. I do know it is still an expensive process but $18,000..... :o   This is what my son will be doing for a living soon....can't wait.....billet everything..... ;D

You might be surprised how stingy they can be with machine time..and by the highnormous cost of programming..

You may not find a lot of reasonable metal cutting out there..

Just to use as an example of the costs involved in a "One-off" item.  Now, I'm not talking about machining billet aluminum here, but the process is SLA (Stereo Lithography).  Probably the simplest means of producing a solid (plastic-like) object from a 3D computer data file or drawing.  I just last week contracted to have 5 pieces made using this process.  The parts were small enough to fit inside a 6 x 6 x 10 cardboard box.  $2000.  There was no tooling cost, the material cost was about $40, the finish labor cost about two hours worth, and I did the 3D computer work.  Essentially all they did was download my 3Dfiles into their machine and press start.  no setup, no fixtures, no perishible tooling...  Now imagine if they did the design work and made the parts from billet.  Easily double or triple the price.
Laser scanning often requires an extensive amount of editing to get rid of the "glitches" that pop up all over the scanned surfaces.  They have come a long way in that respect, but you can't get a helmet like the one they have in the video without some serious "clean-up" time invested before the first chip hits the floor.

When I did tool and die, I programmed CNCs as part of my job.  We did prototypes sometimes, and they were about $2500 a piece (for the specific ones I did).  The pieces I did were pretty cool, but nothing like the head pictured above.  I could imagine that head going for $10000.  Of course, once the program is made, then more pieces can be made at a cheaper cost.  And, of course, my knowledge of CNC programming is over 10 years old....

Lots of machine shops need work find a shop that isn't really busy
I got 3 waterjets 2 6 axis and one 7 axis   most of the time we dont even use the full things full time   I cut some gauge brackets for a dude on this foroum site free.. you never now if you aint asking

now that helmet milling is bad ass #$%* it looks like they got nozzles pointed at the bit blasting chips away I wonder if it uses cold air to cool the bit   either way that is what I call CNC machining
