use em or lose em????????
« on: April 09, 2010, 02:29:30 PM »
I finally get down to the last major job before reassembly and after taking a good look at the carbs I am uncertain. Should I keep these and rebuild? The PO used the bike for a fertilizer stand and it really corroded the bodies on the rack both on the intake and exhale side. Will this effect performance or is it really only a cosmetic problem?

Don't know what to do

Take them off and soak them in simple green overnight. Soda blast them and you will think you got new carbs. They will function much better. You probably have residue in the bowls and the jets. You will want to clean everything prior to reassembly. Not only make the bike look better, but run better.  IMHO

Too much corrosion on those carbs for my liking, iwould keep them for parts and buy another set because you don't really know what the fertilizer has done to the integrity of the rest of the alloy..

I think you'll have an issue with the shaft and the float bowl gasket.  Better off keeping them around for spare parts.

yup parts carbs... a unrebuilt carb set can be found pretty cheap. dont waste the time on them.. like they said time is money and the time you will have in those wont be worth it. ebay is a good place unless someone on here has a set.. good luck

1st- slap the PO.  An SOHC/4 is NOT meant to carry sacks of sh*... wait... well, anyway...

2) yeah, get new carbs... OR in a real pinch (like if you're really broke) clean them really well and touch up the edges with a small jeweler's file. Maybe fill in some pitting with JB weld, then file smooth.  The only permanent and optimal solution is new carbs, but we're all hurting in our wallets, and the above might buy you a month or two or just a chance to get the bike started.

As bad as those carbs are, don't throw them out! I could possibly use some parts off of them!

Everyone knows you don't ever throw any parts out! Like that broken starter button I have around and my old chain and sprockets. You never know when you might need them...

Gentlemen,

The issue is settled, I started cleaning the carbs when I discovered that 2 of the bowls had holes in them from the corrosion.

BUT...I fortuntely purchased an entire complete other 74 350 F-1 at the Elephants Graveyard that has a very nice set on it.

I will be parting out this bike. You guys have first shot and the prices will be low...I assure you. You have been too valuable a resource not to repay you.

Soon...thats a promise (that means at least by Fall)

I would replace the carbs as said all the way through here.

Old chains work great for hanging bamboo chairs from under the deck ;D ;D
