81 CB 650 afraid to ride at night
« on: April 10, 2010, 07:52:29 PM »
I love to ride at night because it is cooler as in the air and it just feels good.  However it scare the crap out of me.  The speed limit is 70 mph and I just dont feel like I can see enough or far enough.  Does anyone else have this problem?  Any thoughts on overcoming this.  I mean I rode tonight but like I said scared myself several times.

So don't do 70 mph. Make sure your headlight is fresh and aimed properly. Try riding in town a little bit at first....street lights, etc.
Go at your own pace. If it's uncomfortable, don't do it.

i dont like riding at night,,i dont need to ride at night,,your age has a lot to do with night blindness,,im 51 and can see well,,only have reading glasses,,but at night my vision isnt what it was, keep the pace down and be extra alert for animals and such at night, get the hottest globe your bike will handle,,my car has a four headlight affair, low beam is 100 watts x2,,high beam all four lights come on,,the outboard go 130 wattsx2 with the inboard pair at 150 watts x2,,mobile paint baker!!this really helps my night driving.

Perhaps I need a brighter bulb.  It is hard to rie in town because I live just off the highway 10 miles out of town.  Now sure I have heard of people replacing the headlamp on these 81 cb650's maybe that is something I need to look into

I think you still have a sealed beam light in your year of bike so... here ya go... this has the full conversion kit you would need to change from a sealed beam to an H4 setup. It's like 4x brighter for those of us who can't see #$%* in the dark with the same power usage. We put this in our '80 CB650 and it works great. It has the reflector and everything you need to change it over. We put in a better brand bulb than the one in the kit and kept it as a spare. Just remove your current light and put this in. There are other sellers on there. I've personally had good results, fast shipping and decent pricing from these guys.

Otherwise, you can just buy a bulb and put it in if yours isn't a sealed beam setup.
1969 CL350 Scrambler... almost done!!! Well, until something else goes wrong. :)
2006 HD 883 Sportster, stock. No use changing it, it's still gonna be a Harley.

yeah i ditched my sealed beam and adapted a 7 inch h4,i used the lamp holder assembly from a car and got it to fit in the honda bucket,,im only using a 60/55 watt globe,i dont ride at night,i think the sealed beam was like 40/35 watts,my concern is oncoming cars can see the brighter lamp during the day,,has any one tried those blue dazzle globes?or "arctic white" ones?i think they are seen easier during the day but maybe less actual light falls on the road at night.
