cb400f chain upgrade
« on: April 09, 2010, 05:10:42 AM »
a newly acquired cb400f is in need of new chain/sprockets... i always prefer to upgrade to something modern in instances like this so the obvious choice to me is an x -ring. using the search function i see that im looking at 96 links, and that 530 (which im assuming the current chain is) in an x ring is a little wide so 520 would be best. found this which isnt too expensive:

so just need to work out some sprockets in 520. not been able to find cb400f specific 520 sprockets. any ideas on somewhere europe/uk based that has them?

one thing i was considering... was to get the standard sprockets and have someone local machine them to the right width. cant imagine its too difficult. please let me know if this is a terrible idea...

thanks

I have a 530 x ring on my 400F and no clearance issues.

Maybe some are too wide but mine is clearing no problem.

The clearance problem is mostly at the rear left shock. Larger diameter shocks with long springs - Mulholland for example - will interfere with a wider chain. It depends on where the adjuster rings is located. Stock-like shocks with shorter springs should be fine.

i see.. interesting about the shocks. d m engineering do front and rear sprockets in 520 that fit (the rear sprocket requires spacers), but the rear is an alloy sprocket... so not sure yet. if the 530 fits ok i may just go with that although i do like the idea of a lighter chain.

530 chain: http://www.intobikes.co.uk/products/000081/Afam_530_Pitch_-6_XRR_Heavy_Duty_X_Ring_Chain?st=mn

not too expensive if it lasts a long time. whats the consensus on a 520 conversion. is it worth the extra fuss?

I would have to think a 520 would be fine ...Sport bike guys do it all the time with WAY more HP than a 400 will ever have. I had no shock clearance issues and I am using the stock chainguard and aluminum Konis. I will get into the shop and figure out which chain it is. I thought the x ring was proprietary to one mfgr?

I have a 530 X-Chain on my CB400F also, with the Konis and no issues with clearance.
