PORTLAND, OR: ride/party 4/17
« on: April 10, 2010, 12:31:08 PM »
Hey people. DOOMTOWN MOTORWORKS is having our spring ride/party next saturday, April 17th. It is also my birthday party. We will be meeting at the shop at 10am and rolling out for the ride at 11. OMRRA (local road racing organization) is having the vintage meet and greet for their members at 5pm, and the party starts at 7. There will be a couple kegs and meat and veg grills. Beer will be provided, but bring stuff to grill. We will also be doing slow races again in the parking lot. I will post the ride route once we get it nailed down.

The shop is at 525 NE 19th, behind Black Sheep Bakery. From NE Sandy, go north on 19th, and turn left into the parking lot on your left after the stop sign at Glisan. This is where NE Hoyt used to be. Our shop faces this lot, and is basically at the bakery's back door.

*****
For those of you who don't know, DTMW is a 4000sf collective motorcycle workshop. I hold the lease on the warehouse, but rent individual spaces for people to do their own thing. Most guys are doing their hobby projects, but a few of us do work for other people. The bikes range from old to new and big to small (one shopmate runs and races in an organization for mini road and motard racing). We share a welding/tooling room, kitchen, and bathroom, and there is also a practice room for my band. It's a pretty unique situation, in that we are able to have this huge facitlity and shared resources that wouldn't be possible if we didn't pool together. Come check it out!

Hmmm, I hope Kit's 350 is running smoother by then. It still has some hesitation at high revs. We're working on it. Should have the cafe seat by then too. Will try to bring it but if not, the 650 is still screaming to get on the road any chance it gets.  :D I would totally love to leave the HD at home this time and just bring 2 old Hondas for some fun.  ;)

it does! we haven't nailed down the ride route yet if you have ideas. i was thinking of taking marine to troutdale, then the scenic highway to bull run road, then taking that to estacada. i don't know how low the snow level is though.

Hey guys, Nick needs a head gasket for the ride. Anyone? If not, Doc Brown maybe?

Man, I'm so torn now. IF (big if) my bike is up and ready to go, I have to choose between you guys and a CG ride. If my bike isn't running, I'm driving out to the shop party  ;D

i great alternate that's much shorter, would be burnside to skyline, all the way to scappose. there are lots of great windy roads the whole way back we can take. yeah that's what i'm thinking. i'll make up a map.

exactly up in there is always nice. In fact they have re paved some of Scapoose Vernonia Highway so its not a bone rattler pothole dodging nightmare anymore you can actually enjoy the turns. Also I was riding Apiary a few weeks back and for spring riding it was really free of gravel and the likes.

apiary rd was part of the FF spring opener route. i might be into doing scappoose-vernonia highway. we're going to map something out today.

yes. mapquest will be difficult.

from the shop, we will go up sandy to burnside, and cross the river. burnside turns into skyline at the top of the hill. most of the ride will be on and off of skyline. the first stop sign is cornell rd. turn right, then left on thompson rd. in about 1/4 mile. this brings you back to skyline at another stop sign. turn right onto skyline in the same direction. from this point, we will take skyline all the way to its end, at dixie mt. road, passing germantown rd and corneluis pass on the way. this is 15-20 miles i believe. we will catch up with each other at this intersection.

next, we will turn right down nw rocky point rd, which drop down to hwy 30 at scappoose. turn right on hwy 30, back towards portland. a few miles up hwy 30, turn right on nw logie trail rd, which will come back up to skyline again. turn left onto skyline. we will take this back to cornelius pass road, and turn left back down to hwy 30 again. right on hwy 30, then in 1/8 mile or so, turn right on mcnamee rd, which will come back to skyline again. on skyline, we will turn right back towards cornelius pass, then turn left on nw brooks rd which is at the top of a big hill. take this down to kaiser, then turn left. this hits germantown rd. left on germantown, back up to skyline. at skyline, we will turn right and have a beer at skyline tavern. leaving the tavern, we will turn left back to germantown rd, and turn right down to hwy 30, then cross the st johns bridge.

in st johns, we will turn left on lombard, going through the little downtown strip, then continue until it hits colombia. turning left at this intersection, it remains lombard until kelly point, at which point it becomes marine dr. from here we will stay on marine dr past the expo center and I-5, and turn right on 33rd. taking 33rd all the way south to sandy, turn right and come up sandy to 19th, and turn right back to the shop.

TO SUMMARIZE: we are pretty much taking skyline out to scappoose and back, zigzagging along the way. if you're feeling slow or get lost, you could simply stay on skyline to its end, and turn around and wait for us at skyline tavern. from there, we're just taking the n portland route back instead of skyline. if you're gonna go, study the route in maquest. it's not as complicated as it sounds.

So the people who get lost and confused on the ride get to drink more beer and thus become more confused  ::) ... seems like a win win to me.

yeah, who could complain?  ;D

the route seems a little confusing, but makes sense when you ride it. i've not done this exact route before, but i've ridden all of these roads a lot, and it will be fun.

Gas up before arrival, but we'll stop at the chevron on w burnside on our way up. The fewer people gassing up there the eaiser though.

I can't wait... I may loose sleep tonight...

Oh the wind, the sound of vintage motor bikes clack clack down Portlands byways. The smell of oil and gasoline that always finds its way stuck on my fingertips after riding. The worn out leather a jackets, the glances from intrigued women and the cries of small children... ;D
