I spilled some on my 1-2 hour fresh paint ( could fingerprint it VERY easily ). Didn't do anything to it!! I just sprayed black base coat so it would look factory satin black. I'm sure dot 3 or 4 would have strip every drop of paint of off it. I know of some car guys that put it in there muscle
 cars with no problems. Just don't use it in an anti lock brake system because it will foam up with the purging of the system. I don't know of any reason not to run dot 5 unless you like the paint ate off you calipers and the insides rotted.
The thing about common sense is that, it's not that common.
