Old BMW Resources / Book?
« on: April 05, 2010, 12:50:48 PM »
Anyone know of a good book on the history (specifically interested in mechanics) of BMW motorcycles (pre 1980?). I'm thinking one may be my next purchase, but I don't even know where to start.

Thanks!

I've found Alibris Books (http://www.alibris.com/books) good source for (if you have no need to brand new) books on less than mainstream subjects. I just went to their site and entered "bmw motorcycle" in their search field and it brought up quite a few titles. Just a thought.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Hi Oak,

Two books come to mind, but I don't know if they are available as new anymore.  Perhaps you can find good used copies.  I think these apply to the area you are interested in.

BAHNSTORMER
The Story of BMW Motorcycles   by L.J.K. Setright   (Yes, that is his real name)
covers the mechanical changes of the bikes, some of the racing history

ILLUSTRATED BMW MOTORCYCLE BUYER'S GUIDE
by Stefan Knittel  and Roland Slabon
covers mostly the the 1960's to the mid 1980's, some of the 1950's

Good luck,
