Hello, everyone.

I am working on my 1976 CB550F, like EVERY year.. and I put in one of those electrosport Regulator/rectifiers.
The install went fine, but it is appears it only delivering 7.5V.

I don't get it.

I searched around to see if anyone else had this problem.. but I found nothing!
I really feel like I have the right part...
Could I be doing anything wrong? Or is this regulator for a 6V bike?

thanks!
c

PS.. If I drop my old regulator in, it gives me 13.5V, so I have ruled out any outside issues.

Hi camn, Welcome to the Forum.  I'm not familiar with that reg/rect., but I would be surprised if it was for a 6V battery.
I am curious as to why you changed from the dead reliable stock reg/rect. ?..... I hope that 'solid state' one has not damaged your alternator.... ( sorry, I'm not a fan of those later design reg/rect.'s when used on our older bikes )...... also, is your battery in good shape, will it take and keep a charge O.K. ( out of the bike, that is ) ?
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,

Hey!

Thank you for the prompt reply.

I changed it to replace the rectifier. It was giving me some problems.
The battery IS good out of the bike.. and no worries re: my alternator.. I didn't leave it hooked up. :)

It actually runs great with just the rectifier side hooked up (using my old regulator) but it annoys me that it doesn't work right.

It may be for a 6V battery !... I'd call the place I bought it and double-check.

Why not just run the old regulator with the new rectifier???

That's the correct one. Make sure it is grounded properly.

Esport_Evan member is ElectroSport's Evan on our forum. Search his ID and email him. I haven't seen him around in a while. I communicated with him about the capabilities of that R/R unit. I was concerned about the use with a 750A field coil with it's higher output pertaining to the rectifier portion. He told me it can handle maybe 3 times the output we get.

Grounded properly.. grounded properly.

It shares a ground with the rectifier part, right?
Because the original regulator ground WAS orphaned in the deal.

If it WASN'T grounded properly, do you think it would give me a rock-solid 7.5V? (it is nice and consistent, btw. No fluctuations with RPM or anything!)

So, just an update..

Nobody at Electrosport returned my email.. and when I called, and pressed #2 for support, I got a message saying "that mailbox is full".

I will try fooling around some more with grounding when I have a chance.. though she is running so great right now, I am hesitant to mess around.

I am selling my car, btw. Soon it will be me, my cb550, and the bus :)

Did you try this address: evan@electrosport.com? Mention our SOHC4 forum since he is a recent member. Maybe that will help (provided he is still there)

i have one of their solid state units on my k4 750. works perfectly all the time.

Maybe you can help me then?

Tell me if I missed anything:

Rectifier Harness: straight replacement.
Regulator: Black and white wires only connected... leaving an orphan ground wire.

Is that it?

then... measured at the battery while running, I should see 14V, right? not 7.5?
Am I missing something?

I actually had an idea... there is a "Silicon Rectifier" plugged in above my Regulator.
Does that have anything to do with this?

You have a Honda rectifier AND an Electrosport Regulator/Rectifier unit both hooked up??!!

How many wires and what color come from the replacement unit?

AS far as I can tell there are 2 things called a 'rectifier' on my bike.

Parts #4 and #5 on this diagram:
http://www.hondaparts-direct.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=123144&category=MOTORCYCLES&make=HONDA&year=1976&fveh=2943

The replacement replaced #5 at the wiring harness.. and had a black and white wire (no green!) for the Regulator (#2)

I had ignored part #4.. but I was thinking about it. . do I need to pull it to get my missing 7 Volts?

that electrosport unit? the one thats a regulator and rectfier? you dont need the factory regulator OR rectifier, in fact you might end up getting half voltahge if you dont get rid of the factory parts.

Maybe we're getting somewhere. If this doesn't work you may need to get some help in person. How about posting a picture of your setup!!!!!

IF you have an Electrosport REGULATOR/RECTIFIER COMBINATION unit it replaces the Honda Voltage Regulator (#2 in the parts diagram) AND the Honda Rectifier (#5 in the diagram). It should have enough wires to hookup and replace both units. Forget rectifier #4 for what we are doing! Leave it alone.

Bucky and I are on the same page. BUT, you still haven't told us what color all the wires are that comes from that F____N unit!! That could make this simple.

Yeah, thats what I thought it did.

The harness is 3 yellows, a red and a green. these are the rectifier side.

The loose wires are black and white. The regulator side.
This:

What >IS< part #4?
I have one, but I can't find it on my wiring diagram.. and I dont conceptually understand what it is for!

i used a honda boldor one on my 500 and its great,it sounds like your field isnt getting voltage, and 7.5 is the battery voltage with the key on,lights on and no alt output?check the field is getting power.

from what i remember about my electrosport unit all the wires went to the same color ones on the harness wth the ones not in a plug going to the regulator spade lug wires on the harness

Not at all. that is the funny thing.

Lights on, key on, engine OFF... Voltage at the battery is 13.
Start her up.. and with the ESR240 hooked up, my voltage drops to 7. With my STOCK regulator in, it is 14.

It is bizzare. I tried it again last night, starting from the beginning.. but it is no good.

I figured I would return it, but so far I am getting the cold shoulder from Electrosport, so I am probably f-ed. Could be worse. I did sell my car yesterday, so I am Moto-only now!
