good site for DOCH4 cb750??? comparison to a SOHC4?
« on: January 24, 2006, 12:53:42 PM »
i've got a 1980 DOHC cb750 i stumbled across and had to buy ($400), because it had an NOS motor in it that hasn't even had its 600 mile valve adjustment (!). the PO bought it from his mechanic, who happened to be a honda dealer who had bought up a bunch of these motors in the 80's. the motor had been sitting in the honda warehouse for 20 years, missing only the covers which had been scavenged years ago. i'm not particularly fond of the appearance of this bike, and haven't quite figured out how to make it over (if even possible) because of the tank and sidecover design, and because the frame is pretty wide. the original plan was to clean it up, tune it up, and sell it to fund other projects, but i've had too much fun riding it.

does anyone have a good link for tech data on this bike?

has anyone ridden both a SOHC4 cb750 and a DOHC4 cb750 and can give me a comparison? i own and have ridden cb550's, but never an early 750. i love this bike for the power and good handling, but am really more into the vintage look. can i expect similar out of a SOHC cb750?

Where to start, where to start...

In spite of it being a chopper-oriented site, http://www.slickschoppers.com (forum at http://p214.ezboard.com/bslickschoppers ) has some really top-notch DOHC CB750 builders there. Three names in particular to look for: LadyDr, freebyrd, and Cooter44. These gents know the DOHC inside and out, and if they don't know the info you're looking for, they can certainly help you find it.
Another site you might want to check out is http://members.fortunecity.com/cb900f/ - granted, it's more oriented toward the DOHC 900 and 1100 F models (they say they use 750's for doorstops), but the DOHC knowledge base there is second to none.
As regards its standing against the SOHC 750, all I have is a '76 550 and a '73 750 (not running yet), so I  know only what I've heard. I The gents at Slick's state the SOTP power is much greater than that of the SOHC, particularly at takeoff. The only downside I've heard of is a potential weakness in the primary chain, or was it the cam chain? Either way, very bad juju. You can make just about anything "look" vintage, but obviously the authentic vintage bikes will inherently have that look to them, not faked.

Again, not your model but www.cb900c.net looks at the 750/900/1100 Custom models.

At least the engines are the same!

I had an '82 CB900F for several years and put about 20,000 miles on it, mostly extended rides/touring type stuff.  I've heard comments that those engines had their problems, but I had zero trouble with mine and believe me when I say I didn't baby it.  The only negative I would say about it was that it had more motor than chassis and brakes.  Since the 750 has less power, maybe that isn't so much of a concern.  The 750 and the 900 are similar in a lot ways, even a lot of parts interchange.  I thought it was a great bike and rode it a lot considering all the other bikes I had at the time.  However, when it came time to thin the herd, I sold it and the thought of selling my '75 750F never even entered my mind.
