Part or Keep
« on: April 14, 2010, 07:56:04 PM »
This might go in the project section. So I picked up this 76' cb750 for $150. no title. In Kansas I can get an antique title if its 35 years old on a bill of sale, which would be next year. So I can either find a titled frame, or wait a year and try then. Engine spins freely, but I haven't gotten into it to see whats going on. Just looking for opinions on what ya'll would do?

Keeper.  The pipes alone make it that.  New seat obviously.  I'm not a fan of the baby ape hangers.  Side cover reproductions are easy to get.
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Yeah, if it's the one with the gas gauge in it, Andy750 was just saying he sold one for over $200 (I think $270-ish ???) on eBay.

Go stock, a bit of polish and make it run good on the thrifty plan.

I agree , the handle bars are a bit tall.

The only things really missing are the headlight, front fender, side covers, right hand control. I have the padding for the seat, the seat cover was in such bad condition though I tore it off to keep it from flying off on the ride home. There was a rats nest under the seat, which had me thinking wires would be eaten through, but I cleaned it up and it looked good. The pipes aren't in the best shape despite the pics. One has about a dime size hole in it and another I can see rust coming through.

Don't  hold out hope that the bike being 35 yrs old next  year will guarantee you a title.  I went in with that idea to the DMV in Johnson County with my '71 cb350 and the bill of sale and was told no dice.  In theory it would work and you would leave the dmv with title/tags but when they do a title search and one comes back, then that voids everything you have just done.  He told me that if there was a title issued on the bike, then you have to have it. Supposedly the bill of sale antique title only works on vehicles that were not given titles when manufactured.  You may luck out in Douglas County and get someone that doesn't care, but the dmv in Johnson shot me done on that.

Good information to know. So you left the DMV and you thought everything was good, and then they sent you information saying no dice. Or in the DMV they told you no dice.

You will first need to take the bike to the DMV in north Lawrence and they will check for frame number on the bike to see if it has been reported stolen. If they determine it has not been stolen then you should be able to get a title when you register it at the courthouse.

That's how I've done everything else I've titled that had a title, kck3 had me a little worried regarding obtaining the antique title though.

Yeah-the dmv in Johnson Co wouldn't let anything happen on the bike without the title to the bike.  I had the title for the bike-but the guy I bought it from had the title all messed up so I went in acting like all I had from the sale was the bill of sale.  He explained to me that if there IS a title to the bike out there, they will find out when they do a search.  He was nice about it, and just gave me the heads up that if we went about it with a bill of sale only antique title, then it would be null and void if they found out a title does exist on the bike.

Geez. This all sounds like a lot of trouble, not to mention expense and labor. You should just sell me the pipes and part out the rest. You'd have a great return on your investment! ;D
