Goop for the cases?
« on: April 15, 2010, 08:43:09 AM »
There is this stuff that comes with Volvo parts that is an RTV but has the consistency of petroleum jelly (thin) and is clear. For closely mated parts this stuff can't be beat- A Volvo mechanic turned me on to this stuff years ago.

It has plenty of work time too. Besides trying to track this stuff down, does anybody have a line on some stuff as described above in consistency?

Do not, repeat, do NOT use any sort of RTV, anywhere on anything that comes into contact with engine internals, ever. It has an amazing tendency to break off in chunks and lodge itself in oil restrictor jets, whereupon you lose your cam and other associated bits.

Use Threebond 1194. Great stuff.

1194 is an RTV, as it vulcanizes at room temperature-

Who knew? Whatever else is magic about it, it doesn't break off in big chunks like silicone-based RTV. Whatever you pick, spread it on as thin as possible and let it tack for a few minutes before mating.
