with the uni 4055 foam air filter, the bottom of it has a red foam circle, where the air tube would normally protrude through on a normal filter, do you not use that air tube part in the airbox when using this filter?

The filter works for both the earlier filter boxes without the breather filter element (CB500) and the CB550s.  That red piece can be poked out, if necessary.
In fact, it says so in those superfluous instructions that come inside the shrink wrapped filter.

any suggestions on what to use as the element material?
I do not have one and would like to make one to use.

I bought one from Honda.

It needs to be open cell foam (you can breathe through it) that can withstand fuel and oil vapor without deterioration.  Needs to be about 1/4 inch thick.

Someone suggested cutting one from a thin Scotchbrite pad.  If you do this, make sure it fits tight.  Scotchbrite is abrasive.  So, I expect it vibrating about inside would wear at metal coatings.
