What can you tell me about this gas cap? I just scored a sweet deal on a tank and side covers and it came with this cap. It's vented and the rubber is new, the chrome will clean right up, but what's the deal with the plastic center?
I've never seen one like this. What did it look like originally and what can I do to restore/replace it?
BTW, I have a "regular" chrome cap I can use but I'm really curious about this one...

It functions as a gas gauge if it still has the float attached to the cap.

I can not see the face on the gauge, but keep in mind the original ones in used condition can bring in some nice change. I had one of the originals that came on my K4. It worked and was missing the plastic lense. I still got over $100 for it. I do not recall what the original lettering was except it said JAPAN on it. The newer ones look the same but do not have the JAPAN on it.

There was another thread on parts 4 sale of a restored one for sale that offered something like donating 20% of the sale price on e-bay to sohc 4 forum if the buyer was a member.

I'm pretty sure there are no "guts" left in mine...I'll check closer today. Maybe I can find a Honda emblem or something to stick in there where the gauge once lived.

Yes, that is the picture of the one that I sold on eBay. I started the bidding at $20 and was taken back at the ending amount. They make similar ones you can buy new on eBay for $110. I got over that amount for my working used one with no lense. Probably because it was the vintage style you show in your picture.

I sold mine because of personal preference. I just think they look bulky and to be honest, sort of ugly on a nice OEM tank.

I have a cap like that, and my lens is milky too, but not that bad. I want to replace the lens but that's for a future project. I like being able to see the gas level though.

Ever try polishing it with headlight lens polish? I use the lens polish on my cars to keep the plastic lens covers clear. Works great.

Guess I robbed someone then I got mine with a good tank that had a good petcock and oem emblems it had a light dent in it (took me all of 15 mins to get out with some gentle prybar action) it is identical with the japan stamping and I think I paid around $70 with ship. Hey does anyone own these I haven't mounted it on my bike yet are they noisy? I hadn't put it in yet as it occurred to me it might make a lot of noise the float bouncing around inside the tank and drive me nuts. Shoot if they go for 100~200 broken I wonder what I could sell the working gauge tank and emblems for.... Might pay for that 550 project I've been thinking about

More power to you if you find someone who likes it with enough $ to get you a project bike. Spare those details for later, but I don't think it would rattle real bad with the tank anywhere but empty. Haven't had one myself.

The float bounced around in mine a bit. It wasn't that noticeable when driving but very annoying when parking and such. The viewing window was all milky so I couldn't see the guage anyways, I ripped the float off and threw it in the nearest trash can. This was before I knew they were rare and valuable.

My bike has a very similar gauge on it. The lens isn't cracked but very cloudy. Any ideas how to polish it clear again?

Excellent. I'll give it a try. My bike has that cap and I just found the big white tampon bobber that goes with it. I'm sure it works like crap but I may as well be able to see it work like crap.
