For those who have redone a seat
« on: January 25, 2011, 06:06:32 AM »
What is the height of the padding or foam you used?  I guess there is some room for adjustment but what's "stock?"  5" or so?

It's a 550 and I was going to use carpet padding or a exercise mat as described in some other posts.

Foams have different densities. Thickness then is relative to density, less dense softer foam would need more thickness to approximate the compression a more dense, thinner foam would provide. I'd think carpet pad would fall apart pretty quickly. You can find foam at uphostery supply places. Or call an upholserer and ask where to get it. I ordered a single chuck then "sculpted" it to fit. I wish I had chosen a bit more dense foam.

Does your padding follow the profile of the seat?  It looks like the back of the seat would be way higher than the front as opposed to a rather level look on my other bikes.  Am I supposed top put more layers toward the front?

Not sure how different a 550 seat pan is to a 750, but I cut a few inches off the original foam with an electric turkey cutting knife, then just re=made the seat cover accordingly. Mine is fairly level, with it only swooping up a half of an inch or so in the back due to the way the seat pan is made.
