Hooking up laptop to computer monitor?
« on: April 13, 2010, 12:06:44 AM »
Hi, I tried hooking my netbook to my 17' crt monitor by VGA and a got a scrambled picture like in the photo The monitor is powered thru the computer tower, it is a old apple G3 power mac monitor tried with the tower on and off. Dose anyone know why I am getting getting the scrambled picture?

I am planing on getting a KVM switch so I can hook up two computers to one monitor. Do you think this might solve my problem?

They are not compatible?  I know I had a hell of a time just getting some of my old data from a G4 to a new one.
I believe the issue is operating systems.  I realize you are just trying to get it on the monitor, but same thing I think.

Some monitors have an analogue and a digital switch - you need to make sure your output from the pc is the right format for the monitor or it can get scrambled. What does it say on the input on the back of the monitor? If it's old I'd guess it's analogue and mayeb your PC is outputting in digital?

Seaweb believe it or not there both running OSX even though the netbook is a Dell.  :)

Lordmoonpie the netbook has a vga port and the monitor is vga also. I always thought vga was analog or maybe I am wrong?

I tried Hooking it up to the other PC monitor and the TV  it worked only if you had it for when you have two monitors  side  by side. Where you move the mouse over back & forth.
As soon as you set it to mirror mode (copy of whats on the screen) it scrambles like that pic. Then it seems like there no way to switch the arrangement back to the side by side mode because its scrambled. It's the weirdest thing.  ???

Well, I found out since it's a Hackintosh (pc hacked with mac that mirroring isn't compadable BUT side by side is. So i had to download a tiny program to switch it back to side by side mode which works great. Good enough :)

Anyone else running Hackintosh's?

I had one as my main PC for a while back in the Tiger days, but the quirks got to me and I went back to my iBook. More recently I got my wife a Samsung NC10 and put Leopard on it. She still uses XP since her school requires Internet Explorer for its online stuff, but whenever I uses it gets booted into OS X.

A hackintosh! Just dont let apple find out. They will sue your ass. They sue anything that they can even remotely stretch in court.
I know a person that made one the equivalent of a mac pro, except it cost about 1200 or so. Less than half!

They've threatened to sue Wired for posting a tutorial and it was subsequently removed, but the entire OSX86 and InsanelyMac community stays online without any issues.

Something like that though is covered probably by the 1st amendment. It is kinda like the anarchist cookbook. It is not illegal to have for knowledge purposes. most likely, somewhere on those sites is a disclaimer stating that. If the sites did not do something like that, I am sure apple would be all over it. After all, try putting an apple logo on something that barely remotely resembles their apple, if they catch wind of it, here come the lawyers. There was a case just last year I think of apple doing that to some company.

They why did Wired have to take down their information?

how is it unrelated lammy? What, the articles dont talk about not suing people for talking about hackintoshes?
The articles are relevant to display apples reputation for suing over small things.

Do you have any real info about wired taking it down or not? Maybe apple sent them a request to take it down and wired complied on their own.

http://www.macnn.com/articles/09/01/14/apple.threatens.wired/  Hmm, looks to be what I stated. It also was most likely done because wired had a link to pirate bay for an illegal download of osx.

Amen to that.

Its is illegal because it volutes the Eula but, apple is more concerned about trademarks as you shown and  keeping new products quite and product names. They have cracked down a bit on people selling them. But for personal use they know they make money off it. People buying the legit OS it's only 30 bucks most don't have a problem spending that.  Also after trying out a mac for 1/4 the price,  a lot can go and feel better spending the money on a mac.
