I'd like to hear about some mega mileage 500/4's if they're out there..

Mine went 35k+. My brother's went almost 80k, without even one engine disassembly!

Wow Mark!  80k is impressive!  I've heard most have their cylinders far out of round by 50k.

The 750 rolled over 140,000 miles yesterday.  Because of the 2011 and 2012 relays and my current 62 mile round trip commute, I have been racking up the miles on it in the last year and a half at a faster rate than at any other time in the 35 years it has owned me.  Even so, there have been no mechanical issues in the last 5,000 miles.  I looked at my records to see what the last repair was.  At 127,000 miles I replaced both fork seals, one was leaking intermittently.  At 124,000 a throttle cable broke, so I replaced both of them.  Aside from some tire, chain and sprocket changes, that's it.  Not a bad record.  My BMW has been a good bike, but it can't touch this 750 for reliability.

140K is a pretty good milestone, so rather than hit it during the mundane commute, I took one of the other bikes to work, and waited until the weekend to take a little ride on the 750.  I rode down to Swan Falls on the Snake River, about 30 miles south of my house for some scenic photos.  Swan Falls Dam sits in one of the several canyons the Snake runs through.  There's a dirt road that runs 5 miles down the river from the dam to a dead end, so I took that.  I took a few photos and a video so those interested could check out some southwestern Idaho scenery.

The road had a lot of washboard.  The windshield really rattles.

I had one mishap on the way home.  A rock kicked up by a car took out the lens on the Bosch H4 sealed beam conversion I put on there way back in the 80's.  I ordered a Hella yesterday to replace it.  I hope it is as good as that old Bosch unit was.

It was blue, reflecting the sky.  It was the most smoke-free day we've had since the first part of August, I think.

Have you done all 140k behind the Vetter? I'm still behind you, sneaking up on the 140k number real soon. All but 230 miles were with my 'Jammer I. Looking for a Quicksilver for the 350F, now.

Almost.  The bike had 3500 miles on it when I bought it July, '77.  I put the fairing on it the winter of '77-'78.

Well done Greg! I liked that road you were on and the video really highlighted it. Looks like you had a great day for the 140K ride. Now onto 150K!!

:)Greg.....Really enjoyed you update on your 75F. I bought a new one in 1976, rode it 2 years and moved up to a 900. Loved the bike. Anyway in November I found a 75 F with 15k on it. Had been setting for a long time. I cleaned the carbs, the brakes, did some tuch up on the frame. It came out looking real good. Have put about 1,500 miles on since getting it running. It runs and rides like new.  My bike in 1976 and this one only get 28 or 29 mpg. They both have stock jetting. I usully ride 65 or 70. How are you guys getting 40 mpg?

The 750 rolled over 145,000 miles yesterday on the way home from work.  These last 5000 miles came a little slower than the last couple of years.  After the relay ride last June, I started riding the KLR back and forth to work.  I put 2500 commuting miles on that bike that would normally have gone on the 750.  Plus another job change location has brought my commute down to 30 miles round trip. I sold the KLR at the end of last summer, so the 750 is back in harness on the commute grind.

No real issues to report.  The original clutch cable decided to fail right at the start of the relay ride last June.  I was lucky to find a seized up one at a local m/c wrecking yard.  I managed to free it up and was back on the road in three hours.  I ordered a new cable when I got back, but the raunchy old one is still on the bike.  No need to change tappet adjustments at the last 3000 mile check.  Oil consumption was up on the relay ride last year.  The bike used almost a quart during the 1300+ mile ride.  It was hot those days riding across Nevada, and the last day across Idaho to meet up with Motorfist and crew, plus extended intervals at 70-75, loaded heavy, with plenty of headwinds contributed to that.  I figured at the time that was it, the engine had finally started to show its age.  But since then, oil consumption is back to nearly nil.  The minor weeping on the left side of the cylinder block still comes and goes, not really an issue.  The tach is still wonky, I've never addressed it.  I noticed last summer that the speedo would start reading low when temperatures get into the 90's.  It works normally at temperatures below that.  The RK o-ring chain has 11,000 miles on it now.  I can't remember when I adjusted it last.  It was probably when I installed the ME88 rear tire over 6000 miles ago.

That's about it. Pretty uneventful.  I've been toying with the idea of doing at least a top end on it at 150,000.  The cam chain has to have significant elongation by now.  I'll decide when I get there, probably in about a year at present rate.

Newboots, I missed your post from over a year ago above mine.  How's your '75F running?

You got some serious miles Greg!!! You must be doing something right with it. I'm sure it wouldn't mind a top end rebuild though. Don't know when I'll get to mine but it will really have to start running bad and /or leaking way more oil before I do it. I'm starting to get the cam tower puck weep thang going on but not even close to really being a drip (only 28K miles on a stock 75K that used to live in Wyoming). When my engine does finally come out though.... I will be installing the Gordon kit that I have been sitting on for a few years now.

Thanks, I'll keep this going as long as the bike does.

I like the KLR650 a lot, especially the pre-2008 versions.  I sold it because things were starting to feel a little cluttered around here again, but I know I'm going to miss it this summer.  As a commuter, the KLR has a lot of pluses.  A 6+ gallon tank and 50-55 MPG means not having to fill up as often.  The motor is a torquey sucker that willingly lets the bike cruise at 70-75 and has no trouble keeping up with traffic and then some.  I like how high the bike sits, it lets you see over traffic.  It is nimble, narrow, and handles decently with a light feel once you figure how to ride it with its long travel suspension.

Greg.....In 1976 I bought a new 750F. Loved it, but moved on in a couple of years. Well in 2012 on Craigs list was a 1975 blue 750F with 14k on it. I ran on 3 cylinders, brakes locked up, muffler rotted out, but looked good. I bought it, took it home. Worked on it all winter. In 2013 I took it on the same route of a trip I took in 1976 to Colorado. The bike ran fine, and it was fun remembering the 1976 trip. That year I ended up putting 10k on the bike. The only thing I didn't like was it only got 32 miles per gal. That winter I took the carbs off and lowered th needles. The bike now gets 43 miles per gal and runs strong. Last year I put an other 10k on the bike. The bike runs great, and is fun to ride. The head gasket just started to weep a little if you run it over 5k for long stretches. I change the oil every 2500 miles and tune it up every other oil change. Hope to keep this one and put a bunch of miles on it.

Thanks for the response Bucky.  It looks like you are off to a fine start.  You couldn't have picked a better model for long time use.  Mine topped 149,100 miles on the way home from work yesterday.  As you may have heard, the '75 750F is rather special in that they were all hand assembled by none other than Soichiro himself.  So it is good to hear of another one resurrected and back on the road.   Get a hold of Jerry Rxman Griffin on this forum if you have any questions about your bike as he has an encyclopedic knowledge of the model, parts availability, etc.

At the end of last week's commute, the mileage on the 750 was 60 miles short of 150,000 miles.  So my wife and I went for a ride down to the Owyhees in southwestern Idaho on Sunday to watch the odometer turn over.

The last time the odometer displayed this was April of 1996 –

Overlooking the Snake River –

Just outside Oreana, ID with 150,000 on the clock –

Some shots of the old Catholic church in Oreana. It is still used for services –

It’s a b i i i g country –

We stopped for cheeseburgers at the Murphy General Store.  They are decent burgers –

I have a hard time riding past an old barn without stopping and taking a picture –

OK, as for a recap of the last 5,000 miles there is not much to tell that is a big deal, except the bike had its 40Th birthday in February.  Just after the 145,000 mile report, the ignition switch began to get a little wonky.  I'd have to fiddle with it a little to get the power on.  It got worse and worse until one morning before work I couldn’t get the bike to light up.  I took the switch out a couple of days later and found the plastic housing part of it was crumbling.  40 years and plastic are not a good combination.  I pride myself on the ability to fix or fabricate anything, but this would have been a challenge.  I soon found out the switch is NLA from Honda, but saw David Silver Spares listed an aftermarket one for a very reasonable price.  I’ve heard some bad things about some of the aftermarket switches, but threw the dice and so far so good.  It was an exact match for the OEM one except it isn’t quite so crumbly.  And the 3 ohm Dyna coils haven’t slagged it either.  It does another thing the original hasn’t done for a few years – it clicks when you turn the key.

There were oil changes at 146,000 and 149,000 miles, along with the usual 3000 mile tappet clearance check.  No change at 146, but at 149 the intakes on 1 and 4 would pass a .0015 feeler, but not a .002.  First adjustment I’ve made there in a while.  I finally took the wrecking yard clutch cable off and put the new one on somewhere in there.

At just over 146,000 miles I replaced the needle jet sets as fuel mileage was dropping (low to mid 30s at the lowest), no choke was required for start up, plugs were sooty, and it stank.  This is the third time I’ve done this.  The needles were very visibly worn.  Unfortunately, these sets are NLA from Honda, but I was able obtain 8 sets.  So I have 4 in reserve for some day down the road.  The previous times I did this, fuel mileage would jump back up into the mid 40s, and throttle response would be crisp.  But this time it went only up to 39-40 mpg typically.  It still smelled rich, and ate gas when I was fighting headwinds coming back from Bonneville Salt Flats with Pimpzilla after meeting Old Scrambler and his crew.  I had always installed the clip in the stock middle position before and had good results.  But in January I decided to drop the needles one notch to see what would happen.  Fuel mileage is now back to 45-46 on the commute and on our ride two-up last weekend.  It really needs the choke now to start, is a little cold blooded like I remember it being.  Runs perfectly when warmed up.

During our ride last weekend, I was impressed how effortlessly it still spins along at 65-75 two-up, when by all rights it should be feeling very tired by now.  I see I talked about some oil consumption during the 145K report.  I had the same thing happen on the ride to Bonneville and back where it used a little oil.  It was the same way, hot air temps and headwinds.  But since then on the daily commute, oil consumption is very little.

I see also in that 145K report, I talked about doing a top end at 150K.  Well, we are there now and it would seem pointless to do it.

theres plenty out there with a lot more miles on them just what can they do? ;) :-\   mick.

So Mick, in the case of this particular bike, I don’t yet have an answer to your nearly 10 year old question and I am happier than a pig in slop about it.

Always enjoy reading your reports, Greg.  This must be some kind of record, original owner, 150K miles, no rebuild.  You deserve an award!

Thanks Stev-o.  Having this bike for so long has been its own award. ;D  I remember reading in one of the bike magazines years ago of a CB750 with over 200,000 original miles on it.  It was a leaker as I recall, but was otherwise running well.

By the way, if anyone is interested in buying the bike, in honor of this milestone I'll hold the $150,000 price until the mileage gets to 151,000.  After that it will begin to increment a dollar a mile again.
