Cylinder Stud Install Poll - What would you do....
« on: April 15, 2010, 06:04:29 am »
Hi all,
Just about to install some new studs (400/4) made for me by an engineering firm in the UK. Before I do so, I have run a tap down the threads to clean them out and am now just about to install them. However, I seem to find conflicting advice so wondered what you had done or used.....

A) Install them dry, and torque them up (I reckon this is not the best option :)
B) Use a Threadlocking compound and torque up.
C) Coat in oil and then torque up.

Whats best??  ???

Don't use a tap...use a thread chaser. I use red Loctite on the case threads. I recommend installing the cylinder and head on right after installing the stud. Torque them down lightly.....this helps align the studs as the Loctite hardens. You can use a piece of thin poster board etc as a "head gasket"
