tank repair
« on: April 15, 2010, 01:15:10 am »
Just bought a tank for a small fortune just to find rust holes along seam behind fuel tap.
this is my 3rd dead soldier. Its a F2 supersport tank and Im having a little trouble finding a good one.
the rust seams to be mainly in one section, about 30mm long by 10mm wide.
Can this be cut out and a new section welded in or repaired some other way.
I am starting to get desperate. any ideas

Clean the area really well getting any rust u can, JB weld the seams and then use a Kream tank sealer kit.  If you smooth it right, after paint you'll never see it.

This is JB Weld  http://jbweld.net/products/jbweld.php We've used it to fix leaks in exhaust and everything. Great stuff. Not so sure about on a fuel tank. Shipping will get you though. I think Hush got some shipped to him or maybe found something similar in your country. You may want to ask him.

For cleaning and sealing the tank, try looking for POR15. http://www.por15.com/

I won't tell you what I think of Kreem. Kids may be reading this.  :-X

Mate,

JB weld is like a plasticine moulded metal - it goes off really hard and does work on some things - not to knock it - but I would not use it on a tank with holes in it...

find someone who can weld and cut the bad section out - back to clean metal and then got another piece shaped to match your cut out and have it welded back in... then clean it up and make it smooth - that might take a while - but at least you have a solid tank after you have finished...

if you bog it up it won't last a long time..IMHO having been down that track and soldered holes in a tank that kept on getting new ones -three times before I gave up and sourced one from a wrecker- which was just as bad - and then found one on ebay amazingly cheap as well.

whereabouts in Australia?? - I am in Penrith NSW..

also use a web site called finapart dot com dot au and put in your details of what you want - you will get a few resposnes for sure..

Yep I agree JB is not a final fix.  I was suggesting it as a temp fix while the tank gets coated then it would just help support it.  Hey Micky what do you have against kream I heard it was good stuff and bought a kit but haven't used it yet any reason I shouldn't?

I think I'm going to get a 'kreemed' tank for free , but why look a gift horse in the mouth?

Cleaning up the pinholes and welding is one option.

And it sounds like JB weld needs to do some overseas marketing.

I had a shattered guitar neck  that needed something that could fill the voids. people use it for intake porting shapes and cracked blocks.. Look at their testimonial page. It works for all sorts of stuff.

You might be able to check it as baggage, make sure it has seals on it, and what they call a MSDS in the states. Planes actually carry all sorts of stuff and might let it slide if you pack it and act like you're supposed to use it for safety reasons if they ask. I think you just put it in there and say nothing.

Hey jus- I'm in Chicago now, live in Oklahoma sort of, and supposed/will be in Vegas in the 12th of next month. The best place to get micros is the Ellis Island, in a super8 motel off of  the strip behind balley's. Voted local favorite, railroad theme. $1.50 U.S. a pint, it was a buck just a short while back. Great ribs at 5:00 if you get there early the line is short.See you there just about when you're about to leave?

sweet that sounds the go. I fly out of Vegas on the 9th of May so I probably miss you. will defiantly go to that joint. Could be short of a quid after the Casino's in Veas
Im also going to san fran and LA its king of a road trip. Any places you can think of that I can pick up cb750 stuff from, I think i might try and bring back some tank treatment on the plane in the check in luggage.
 thanks for the recommendation

That should be ok if it's done properly and then seal up the internals afterwards.
These guys here sell POR15 products.

They're in Sydney.
I'd check with airlines before bringing anything hazardous back.
I know the road freight companies charge a premium everytime I get them to haul dangerous goods into Darwin and it may not be cost effective to fly stuff back and then the customs thing.
Have a good trip mate.
I'm bloody jealous now.  ;D

Don't use a cheap gas less Mig, they are great for doing bird #$%* welds, there is no gas to shield the weld. You would be far better off finding someone that knows what they are doing as welding thin metal is a job for the professionals, you will probably make it worse.....

your right. I thought the gas less migs were crap.
I will find someone to do the weld. You reckon if i spray inside it now with some wd40 or rust inhibitor it should stop anymore rust.

when your in s.f. check out Charlies Place... call or email and talk to charlie before you go, and make sure you talk to charlie... the rest of his staff are mechanics, and are not people friendly! but charlie is a great guy and they have a bunch of odd #$%*. including lots of tanks. and some unusual artwork from old honda parts. they are a busy shop though (last week there was about 2 dozen bikes out front) so just get a hold of him before you get here, cause time is money!
where are you staying in s.f.? just curious, cause im a stationary engineer at a little boutique nestled in pacific heights

Gotta say, I've heard horror stories about kreem. Por-15 is supposed to be decent, but I went with a product by the caswell company and it's superb. It's epoxy and you supposedly don't even need to remove the rust first. I used it and loved it.
