little rubber inserts
« on: April 21, 2010, 06:42:03 PM »
Hi all,
My parts manual shows part# 12195-300-000 (superceded by 12620-286-000) on the piston/cylinder page (E-5 in the manual) as well as on the cylinder head page (E-2).  Where do these things go?

Thanks,
Rob

Ha! exactly Steve,
where do they go?
are they critical?  as in, if I end up putting them in my toolbox instead of in my engine am I screwed?

Thanks,
Rob

They go on the outside of the engine in between the fins . They are there to damp out vibration in the fins . I pretty sure their only purpose is to reduce noise . If you didn't take them out then they are probably still there . They are white in colour and have a small dimple on each end that locates them in a hole drilled in the fins .

Thanks Wrenchmuch,
the replacements are black so I didn't catch on.  I installed the cylinders and head and was preparing to install the cam when I had a minor panic attack.  I was pretty sure there weren't any holes for them to plug between the block/cylinder or cylinder/head, but I admit I started imagining critical duties for them that were obvious to everyone but me...  I won't share what I thought those might be.

Thank you forum!

At first, I thought of the rubber inserts that go under the cam towers to seal the head bolt holes.  But I'm not sure of the rubber inserts you're questioning since they are part of the cylinder assem. and look like they fit under it????
Anyone else have thoughts?

Maybe the two rubbers that go between the head and the jugs...around two of the studs?

I have the seals that go around the "special knock pins" accounted for, and anything else remotely "o-ringish".  The little rubber inserts I refer to are solid and have a small protrusion at each end.  I just popped out one of the white "spacers" from between the fins and sure enough, that's the part I was worried about.  The cylinder parts drawing calls for 20 of them, the head drawing calls for 2 more.  I believe wrenchmuch nailed it.

Yep,
That's where they go, between the cylinder fins.
There are 5mm holes drilled through the fins that the insulator "tit" locates into.
Starting from the bottom, 1 & 2, 2 & 3, then spaced evenly a fin apart to the top.
5 insulators each side of the cylinder block (Left & Right) front and back = 20.
