Topic: Just got back from Africa

Hey everyone.  My girlfriend and I got home a week ago from South Africa.  Thought I'd post a few pics of our adventure and see if anyone here would like to share a similar experience.  

We spent the majority of our time in Johannesburg.  My girlfriend is from there, spent time with family, etc.  We took a few days and drove to Pilanesberg game reserve about an hour and a half outside of Jo Burg, went on safari game drives and stayed at a beautiful lodge nearby called The Ivory Tree.  On the way to the game reserve we dropped by an elephant sanctuary near Hartbeespoort Dam and learned all sorts about the elephant......UP CLOSE!  If your curious what the inside of an elephants trunk feels like, ask me.  Here are some pics from the elephant sanctuary.

Funny you say that.  I did think about wearing my boots but not until we were well into the experience that morning.

Curious.  My girlfriend was from Durban and as much as I wanted to go to to SA she refused because she said it wasn't safe.  I'm curious, what is your opinion on that?

Curious.  My girlfriend was from Durban and as much as I wanted to go to to SA she refused because she said it wasn't safe.  I'm curious, what is your opinion on that?

Well I didn't spend any time in Durban but from what I know it's just as unsafe/safe as Johannesburg.  Durban has come up several times in conversation and nothing negative was ever said about it.  Maybe she had a bad experience there or something.  I mean listen, as far as Johannesburg go's, it's not a city you go walking around everywhere in.  But neither is L.A.  There are areas of town where you just don't go depending on who you are.  I'm a white American tourist and they can spot me a mile away.  I don't know man, I get the safety question a lot and all I can say is, you've just gotta have your wits about you.  Bad stuff happens to tourists all over the world.  Being smart and being with locals helps tremendously

Oh, and I think they built a stadium or two in Durban for the World Cup so it must not be any worse than Jo Burg or Cape Town.

And yes I did.  Not quite as big as the ones in District 9 and the ones I saw were from this planet.  Oh and they tasted delicioso!

I almost forgot to mention:  Any city I'm in I always have an eye out for motorcycles, especially older ones.  I'm sure you guys can relate.  While in Johannesburg I saw a lot of little 1 and 2 cylinder bikes, honda and otherwise that were being used by messengers.  Lots of newer sport bikes, sport tourers and a few cruisers.  Only one old bike.  And it was a cafed honda!  I just about jumped out of the car when I saw it, scared the misses a little
