Any one see the meteor Wednesday night?
« on: April 16, 2010, 01:26:25 AM »

happened about 10pm central Wednesday night.  I Was inside so I didn't see it.  But others around here did and about 60 to 80 miles north of us many herd a sonic boom!  :o

If  any of it did land it probably landed some where in southwestern Wi as Doppler radar shows.

I live out of the viewing range of this one, but I'd be very interested in seeing anything that's recovered from it.  I hear it was estimated to be about a meter in diameter.

I have seen others that have streaked the entire sky, but I'd guess they were only baseball size.

There's a lot of stuff zipping around out in space.  In 1908 in Tunguska Siberia something struck with the yield of a small nuclear bomb.

I wonder when the big one's going to hit....

I saw that vid and obviously not being an expert but that thing seems to be moving WAY to slow to be a meteor.

I figured it was slowed down in the video, but I have no idea.

I saw one in school in the late 90's around October when we went out to the local fire watchtower to go watch the shower.
A huge one that took up a good chunck of the sky went from north to south and was going about as slow as that one.
You could see the green gases coming off it, I was driving at the time and nearly drove off the damn road it was so incredible.

It looked like something from the movies, that was a good meteor shower.  :)

Due to the fact that is was also observed in Indiana, I doubt that there will be any physical evidence remaining. That kind of entry track is indicative of a shallow entry. A shallow entry will produce more heat and burn longer as it flies through the thicker atmosphere closer to the ground.

Man...those are some great clips. My son saw the one the other night here in WI. The news says they think it hit WI somewhere. Maybe some farmer will find it in his field.

There was a segment on NPR about this. Apparently it started out as one piece estimated to be about 3 ft. in diameter, but broke up. However, they are quite positive "findable" (my term) pieces survived and would impact in WI, so get out there John.  ;D

This black and white photo from a rooftop webcam released Thursday, April 15, 2010, by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences shows a fireball as it passed over Madison, Wis., Wednesday night. National Weather Service meteorologist David Sheets in Davenport, Iowa, says a meteor soared past about 10 p.m. local and appears to have disintegrated as it reached southwest Wisconsin. The meteor, also seen in Missouri, Illinois and Iowa, apparently didn't cause any damage. (AP Photo/University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences)

I had heard that it may have been the size of a golf ball or maybe a tennis ball.  They are usually much smaller than you would expect.

It's so bright the sky turns blue.

Yeah, that was crazy watching those video cameras, when they went from B&W from lack of light to looking like daylight outside and back.
