Oil in the exhaust...HELP
« on: August 07, 2008, 08:53:18 PM »
So, I have my rebuilt engine put back together.  It is a 74 550 with a ported head and 650 cam.  I started it up for the first time a few days ago and it sounded great and ran fine.  I let it run for a couple minutes and then shut her down.  Today I re-timed it to get it spot on and fired it up again.  I let it run for a couple minutes and then saw that it was beginning to smoke. Long story short, there is oil in my exhaust.  What am I looking at here as the possible causes.

I am thinking

-Bad valve guide
-Valve guide not sealed

Besides these, what should I be looking for?

first thing would be pulling the plugs and see what cylinder is doing it...
is it even running on all 4???
what do you mean with rebuild engine, bored out,new pistons/rings etc. or only head work etc.
please give more detail on what excacly got done to the engine....

I can just hear the welding torch heating up Marti. ;D
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

when I had oil coming out of an exhaust, it was because of middle rings installed upside down...

really interested in how the 650 cam works...

Sorry, didn't think that the bore would matter on this one.  It is to stock specs, just new stuff put in down there.

I will pull the plugs to see which one is oil fouled, it was too late last night and I felt like calling it quits after this happened.  All four cylinders are running, bike idles and revs fine.  Number one exhaust is much hotter than 3 and four, and I think that it is overly hot, rather than 3 and 4 not being hot enough.  There is a slight popping coming from the exhaust, but I am leaning on an exhaust leak on this and don't think it has to do with the faulty cylinder.

well,i understand you put in new pistons,or atleast new rings....
like i said,i would check the plugs, they should tell you what cylinder is doing it,and im afraid you will have to take it apart again, and see if maybe a ring broke,or installed wrong.....

oh, I am definately taking it apart again. I was just curious if anyone had anymore suggestions on what to look for aside from what the original post says.

what was the problem? did you get it sorted?

I may have a similar problem with my bike, but wont know until new points come in. Can you update me on the situation, and how much the repair ran you?

thanks
