CB350F Gears...HELP :-(
« on: April 19, 2010, 11:05:34 AM »
I am in the process of putting my engine cases back together.
I realized that as I have the gears sitting in place (in the
upper case) that I can NOT cycle through all the gears
without them "locking up" at some point. Is this normal?
I'm referring to the gears locking up, not the shift shaft.
The gears will engage through a couple of shifts...then they
will "lock up" during other shifts. Should I worry about this
or should I just go ahead and install the bottom case and
assume that the gears will work when it's together? It just
doesn't really make sense that I can't cycle through
the gears before I install the bottom case...Am I missing something?

I don't know if this is your exact problem, but you would have to turn either the input or the output shaft to align the dogs so that they can engage.  Normally, the engine is running and some drag will cause the input to rotate, or else the bike is moving and the output is turning.  Otherwise, standing still or especially with the engine off, the bike needs to be rocked (to rotate the output and align the dogs) in order to engage gears.

I can't completely tell from your video clip but does more than one gearset engage before it locks?

Also the first gear CS that your fingers are on seems to have a lot of side play, are all the shims in the original position?

Any chance the two outside selector forks can be reversed. Sorry don't have a 350F here to check.

Thanks bwalleer...I have added an additional video that may give you a better idea of what I am referring to. Also, I will make another post with better quality pictures. Thank you for your help.

Dave,

Check the gear selector mechanism.  It can go in a couple different ways, and something is telling me that yours isn't put together correctly.  I think I ran across the same problem with mine, but I can't remember that far back.

Two things are bugging me. From the side the vid still isn't clear enough for my old eyes to see.

1) It still looks like when you make that shift two separate gears are sliding into enagement which will lock it up.

2) The locating pin for the needle bearing on the c-shaft cannot be seated properly, that whole end of the shaft is cocked up and the bearing cage should be very close to 1st gear.

Will you tell us what you have taken apart?

When I split the case...I never took the gears off the shafts (just lifted off and set aside).
I never took the shifter drum or the shifting forks out of the case.

PROBLEM SOLVED! If you watch the video
above, you can notice that the big rear gear closest
to the side of the case...is backwards. The con caved
side should have been facing toward the inside.
Flipped it around and everything shifts smoothly.
I honestly have no idea how it happened, but I figured
it out after lifting out the rear shaft and having the gear
fall off. I figured if it fell off that easy, quite possibly
it may have fallen off earlier during dis-assembly.
Big thanks to everyone for all their help...it was greatly
appreciated. I'm sure I will have more questions very soon  ;D

Now that you mention it, it looks like the teeth of the big gear barely engage the mating gear. Good job!!!
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Woohoo!  Congrats.  Now we all have something else to look at if our transmissions don't go back together.  So, will your bike be running before mine?
