Best Part Number Reference...Ever?
« on: January 25, 2006, 01:04:11 AM »
I just looked around on the ServiceHonda website...they're testing a part number database program that looks suspiciously like the one that Honda dealers use...it's kinda slow but apparently you can find every Honda part number for any US model bike/scooter, etc.  No instructions are provided so you have to figure things out yourself, but it's not too hard to use.  I'm not affiliated with these guys...it's just a fantastic resource for those without parts books.

Good luck!

Go to the main store: http://www.servicehonda.com/
Click on the parts finder...
Scroll down and click on the red typing 'Imporved, every Honda model...'...
Click on the blue 'Click Here to Begin' about a third of the way down...
Click on 'Connect'...

And it opens up a remote desktop application.

The remote desktop opens up a fistful of windows, making it reasonably confusing.  But once you get in, the exploded parts diagrams are to die for...

For me, clicking on your 'this' directly opens up the remote desktop.  You may have an issue with firewall setting and the like.  I believe this is a direct link-up with their server.  That sort of application can get pretty touchy with security.

Just tried it. You have to allow the installation of an ActiveX control. It seems to be a work in progress, and does look exactly like the dealer interface when I have to go there an beg for parts.  ;D

I've been using this for the past few months. Great tool. You can search by part number, do a where used by part number (really handy), all sorts of good stuff.  For example I needed new wrist pin clips for my '64 Honda Dream. Not easy to find based on the original part number. But the database shows you all the updates and come to find out I can get the clips at the dealer since they are still used on current model bikes.

Here's another way its possible to connect.

start->programs->accessories->communications->remote desktop

server ip: 69.213.66.54

then hit connect.  Then when the program opens, click the green book icon on
the left side..

I've tried both ways - anybody else get this:
If you can't read it, it says
The remote connection has timed out. Please try connecting to the remote computer again.

Just remember to logout, NOT shutdown   ;D

I use RD at work, people don't like it when you shut the school down but shutting the server off.

Hmm, sounds like they have a security problem if they are letting folks in who can do that kind of damage.  :o

They might have the user for the database set to only logoff, I didn't test it ;)  Didn't want to PO them into taking it down.

Using Remote Desktop I have just hit the X up in the corner probably 100 times before. No problems. Can log right back in after doing it.

Hitting the "X" technicaly doesn't log you off.  I just closes the connection and leaves the RD session active on the server.

I have been to this Service Honda site several times this week.  Its a great site when it works, however it seems to be hit or miss on a good connection to the catalog pages.

Great resource for finding Honda part numbers and dealer list price.

Will I really get genuine Honda parts if I order from this site?

Yes, I've used them several times. The only things to be aware of are, their on-line inventory is not always up to date. It may say they have a part, but when they go to make up the order you find out otherwise, either eMail (most often) and I have gotten a phone call. Plus there is a min. shipping charge $8-$9 as I recall so it pays to make up a little shopping list to get the most out of the shipping costs.
