So how about some after market shocks
« on: April 16, 2010, 05:28:24 PM »
So I did a mod to my CB, with the rear suspension. I cut the shock mounts and cross member and moved them both forward about six inches. By doing so, the leverage on the swing arm increased and the stock shocks are too soft, even at stiffest setting.
I am newer to this build and am looking at getting into either custom shocks for a stiffer spring or even a stiffer springs for the stock shocks. I just want to know what some of you other riders are using and possibly any other custom builders that could have some references. That or even some ideas. Here are some pics of the build.

Can't view your pics the way you linked them.  I am using firefox . . .Put the img code from the pic your want to link in your thread and it should show up as a picture in your thread rather than as a link that someone needs to go to to see.

Here are your pics:   ;)
(Just copy and paste the code under your photobucket picture that starts with [IMG...)

Edit: I removed the pictures I posted since you were able to get them in the OP.

Wow, you have really changed the geometry quite a bit.
I don't think you will find shocks that will do what you want,
you may consider using a monoshock. Lots of people have done
that successfully.
Bikes parked out front mean good chicken-fried steak inside.

Interesting build. I like the idea, You will probably have to look at newer shocks and may have to change the mounts if you can't find eye to clevis shocks, tho it seems you are pretty comfortable with welding it should not be an issue. There are some aftermarket shocks that stiffer however only slightly not enough for what you want to do. I have seen some people modding stock shocks, so search for that perhaps you can just stiffen them the way you want them by modding them yourself.

Just a thought..

I would really worry about stress on the swing arm with the lower mount moved that far forward.  Looks like it wouldn't take much to bend the arms with that much leverage being applied between the axle and the new lower mount position.  Stock location almost above the axle pretty much cancels out the bending forces on the arms.  Hope you have a good plan for beefing up that swing arm.

what are ya gonna do w/ the oil tank? have you seen another bike that has this setup and made it work?

if not, you are a pioneer, which is very cool. but pioneers have to blaze a trail. which means stepping in bear #$%* sometimes.

I would talk to YSS or Works about your setup.  I am sure they can get you a custom spring rate that works. However, you will have to go to a different shock.  Also I am not a nay sayer, I too might be repositioning my rear shocks, but your lower shock mounts do not appear to have the most structural integrity.  I am however curious to see the final outcome.

Best of luck and keep us posted on the progress.

I was thinking about the stresses on the rear swing arm, and where the lower mounts are, but with 1/4" plate for the base and a couple of small gussets the mounts should be fine. As far as bending the actual swing arm, i could cut up parts of the top and re enforce the swing arm, that and gusset it up.

I thought about the mono shock mod too, but I wanted to try something different and keep that cool look of the dual shocks with these older bikes. I will keep you all posted on what I find and end up doing about a stiffer spring rate and or shock replacement.
Thanks for some of the imput.

I for one would like to see your finished product. I agree some times you just want to do some thing different and since you seem to have a handle on the mechanics of it I am sure it will work out fine...

Keep plugging away at it..
