Lets see those uncluttered bars!!
« on: March 10, 2010, 06:39:32 AM »
I"m looking to unclutter my clubmans, possibly switch to clip-ons or maybe even throw my superbike bars back on. Lets see what you guys have done to clean up the look of the front of these bikes.

Heres my plans:
Hide a keyed ignition like the one from cycle x
Possible benjies light with incorporated speedo with leds for dummy lights
Newer controls.

What other ideas are there?

Use older controls..72 or earlier right side control. Throttle, kill, hi, lo, & off....all on one side.

Run a dogleg lever on left, and no control  housing.. much cleaner.

greenjeans bike started the thought process to clean up the bars. Thats one of my favorites on this site.
His bars look alot cleaner with no master cylinder though, thats the only advantage front drums have over discs.
Anybody else have any clean pics?

Here's how I did away with some clutter...
I had my brother hollow out some button head bolts
and insert coloured LED's. His idea and it works
great day and night.

Help! I really don't know how to maneuver this site sorry I picked you I just pressed reply. I have a 78 cb750k. After realizing I still had a motor mount in place I finally got the motor up on the bench, the top end is off. Do I really need to replace the primary chains? If so where do I order and what do I need to order at this point? The bike has 25164 for miles and I'm the second owner. It sat for ten years in a garage and I had it gifted to me.I cleaned it up and it ran as new for 5 years due to the fact that his brother had stored it as correctly as can be. I went through a devastating divorce and friends and familt thought it best that I drive something with a coupla more wheels! lol, I'm doing great now! New wife, new life and I miss my old friend and I wanna ride it again! Thanks a million!! Timmy

tmac, try starting a  new thread, or search primary chains on here for previous topics... & welcome aboard.

Lee.. for the cleanest look short of going to internal throttle..
Run the 72 style control housing, or a different switch setup of your own design. Then run 2 matching brake levers of your liking, then run a remotr Mster hidden under the tank.. BMW in the 80s and I think something else used these..

Does Benjie's make a headlight nacelle that will take a speedo?  I've been looking all over for one and come up empty!  I can't find one on his site, can you post some kind of pointer?

And this is a ton of money ,but for the amount of functionality, cleanliness, and classic look it might be worth considering:

Motogadget Chronoclassic

If you want to really go clean, you could consider a SportVue HUD to replace your speedo & tach, but then you're adding clutter to your helmet.

As for brakes, at my KTM dealer I noticed some dirtbikes that have a really compact low-profile integrated reservoir.  This one is for the clutch side, but I saw the same idea on the brake side:

You might want to spend some time on the showroom floor of a dirtbike place and see if you can find something similar.
Life is precious: wear your f'n helmet!
There's nothing more expensive than a free bike...
FWIW, I'm not a shill for Race Tech - I've just got a thing for good suspension and the RTCE's are the most cost-effective mod for these old damping rod front ends.

Those are awesome! How much would he charge to punch up another set of those?

Just an FYI to look out for:
If you look at the Magura master cylinder cover, it has "use only mineral oil" cast in the cover. Using any brake fluid in it will destroy the seals in it. Been there , done that.

I"m looking to unclutter my clubmans, possibly switch to clip-ons or maybe even throw my superbike bars back on. Lets see what you guys have done to clean up the look of the front of these bikes.

I'm doing a 73 cb750 cafe right now. I got a set of clubman bars and started running wires for nos factory controls - the switches on mine were not repairable. I wired one side and it came out pretty good but I still wanted something different. So here's my plan:

I ordered a set of clip-ons that I can run any switch wiring straight through:

I'm going to lower the front end 2" by sliding the forks up through the top tree so that's where the clip-ons go.

I've got a set of ordinary levers for both clutch and brake (fron one my favorite guys, Tyler @ Lowbrow:

I'm going to replace the crazy front disc brake meachnics behind the headlight bucket with a simple cable actuated master cyclinder from another great guy, Fab Kevin:

I was looking through a bunch of super moto listings and found this switch setup that seems to do almost everything:

Turn singnals, hi/lo/off headlights, hibeam indicator, horn, kill switch.

Found another simple starter switch:

and I'm going to use a simple emgo double throttle tube/housing.
This project started in confusion and will end in disarray.

heyjones  & andy750  thanks...I'll ask my brother about the
L.E.D. screws...I'll see if he wants to make up a few sets
for some members. I'll keep you posted. There are a couple of
small issues with these:

1. the neutral light has to be hooked up reverse
(because of the diode in the neutral switch circuit)

2. I have to put a bigger resistor in the blue light, cuz it's
very bright at night (when you need your hi beams)

3. I have to figure out how to make the yellow light
flash when I use left or right signal, as of now it
only flashes when my right signal is on. (but I think
I know how to fix this.)

4. My brother is the one who made these & he is a
busy guy so I'm not sure how interested he is in
making more of these. But I'll ask.

I was eyeballing a set of these in 37mm myself. Did you get these in the states or eBay/England? Just wondering if there's a distributor stateside cause I can't find one online.

I can't seem to get a reply from these guys regarding shipping to the states - they say free but only list the UK. Anyone bought these bars? Free shipping?

Anyone know of a site stateside that sells them?

Wow - that is really surprising.  I would never have expected that a hydraulic system would use anything other than hydraulic fluid, which in my mind = brake fluid.  I guess that they use mineral oil because it's cheaper/easier and don't require the heat tolerance of brake fluid?  ???
