Looking for Ignition Ideas
« on: April 18, 2010, 10:07:27 PM »
I'm running a CB750K2 engine in a vintage race car.  It currently has stock ignition.  I want to upgrade the ignition system, and I'm looking for suggestions.  Ideally, I'd like something based on technology that was available in the early 70s, to be vintage authentic, but I might consider something more modern if there was a good enough reason.  Thoughts?

I don't think you are going to find much from the early '70s. I have a '77 Cycle magazine article that details the use of 4 automotive coils for 4 cylinder bikes, at the expense of point life. There were home-brew CD type ignitions, that used points for triggers (like Hondaman's??), that might be just what you're looking for..

Did Dyna date back to the early '70s? (I never heard of them until I joined this forum.) I have a Gerex electronic that dates to at least the late '70s that works very well.

I'm with Mike on this Get over the Classic aspect and get a Dyna 2000 or at least a Dyna S! The Dyna S hides under standard point cover so they will never know!

Mags are nice, but in this period...no advance was Incorporated so they were notoriously hard to start without a lot of pushing or rollers. And they had POINTS!

The first A.R.D. magnetos had locked in full advance like this.........

The next style was like this with full advance locked in ............

The last style was a C.D.M. A.R.D. Magneto. It was a ( Capacitive Discharge Magneto )  Which is an electronic pickup setup, no points
and it has a toggle switch to lockout the advance so startup is real easy. After startup you switch to run and off you go.   ;D
Here's a picture of a C.D.M. A.R.D  magneto that I picked up for a KAWASAKI. No points and notice the toggle switch on the top to
lockout the full advance at startup. Yes, the first A.R.D. mags were a #$%* to start. Especially when they kick back !!  :o

This is the same setup i run on my turbo'ed 750   ;D

Thanks, everyone, those are some great ideas.  That magneto system would be very cool for vintage racing.  I know mags have their drawbacks, but if my objective was to avoid drawbacks I wouldn't be racing vintage, would I?

KOS. its an SU CV carb, good chance its from Rivera Engineering.

I think the guy that stsarted this topic wants a real period ignition..  to keep in the spirit of what he is doing. I am sure if you say 70s it includes the early Dyna models..

This might be a little bit more simplistic of a solution, but try double springing your points, that is if you want to stick with the points and save a few bucks over an A.R.D. ignition or the likes.

Double springing will take out a bit of the flutter that these tuned engines get at higher rpm's. Heres a link to an article that goes more in depth with the concept, plus it works great if you're on a budget.

Go for the magneto! They do have advantages, too: as RPM goes up, so does spark energy, unlike a regular coil system.

Speaking of period mods, you may want to try Webers..

What do you run for carbs..?

10+ for Webers: I believe the setup data that I posted on this forum was based on your type of racing, ealanm. I extrapolated the data for 1 liter motors to an 836, that revved higher..

What do you run for carbs..?

The engine that it's in it now is all stock, including the carbs.  But I'm building up a vintage race engine that has Hilborn fuel injection.
