500/550 Hybrid Clutch Case ?
« on: April 15, 2010, 05:59:33 PM »
Hi all, been lurking for a while reading other experiences with their bikes and have learned and applied lots to getting my bike started.  But I'm now at fork in the road on my bike.  Its a 72 cb500 with bored 550 head, and a 550 clutch.  The p.o. Did the work. When I bought it, it had a very slow drip of oil, thought nothing of it.  Now that I have her running, its leaking quite a bit.  After some investigation, I realized the drip is coming from the right side clutch cover. That looks to be the 550 case cover.  Pretty much where the clutch adjuster bolt is, the cover has a slight downward curve, and after further investigation I realize the 500 bottom end is straight across.  Has anyone else encountered this? Solutions?  Cut my own gasket with gasket material?  All help is greatly appreciated.
TIA

I dont think a gasket will cure it as the 500 and 550 crankcases and clutch covers are very different shapes

I will check if there is a gap this evening.
Worst case scenario, if there is a gap, is it possible to move the 550 clutch back to the left side? Or do I have to get a new 500 clutch?

Nope the mechanisms are totaly different as are the gear ratios, if you go back to 500 you will need

Clutch complete
Primary gear
Pushrod
LH case complete with opperating mechanism
Plus any other bits that were "swopped"

I guess I won't be swapping back to the 500 clutch...  Anyhow, I tried adjusting the clutch as per clymer manual for 550, when I loosen lock nut and turn adjusting screw counter clockwise all the way and then clockwise 1/4 turn, the clutch lever does not work at all, even when I fully loosen cables or fully tighten.  Also kickstart does nothing.  So I started turning the adjusting bolt clockwise just to see what would happen, it will engage and turn the motor, but still slipping sometimes.  So I get it started (electric), but clutch still won't work no matter how I adjust it.  Any comments or suggestions on where to go with this?
